Photographic Art--Define Please

I would like to say that art, music and any of the other subjects
that are often felt to require talent can be learned. I am an art
teacher. I can teach all the elements of design and it can be
understood by my students. Just as a math teacher can teach the
elements of math and it can be understood. But not every student
will become and artist nor every student become a mathematician.
That does not mean we can't learn about it. Talent is not just
reserved for the creative arts. There are talented people in
computers, science, politics. These people are a minority and
become famous or very good at what they do and at the top of their
field. The rest of us may be artists, actors, computer scientists,
bankers but we never acheive the heights that these small few do.
Perhaps we yearn for notiriety or we are content to take jobs that
use our talents. Or perhaps it becomes a hobby.
Art is an act of creation first for the artist and second for an
audience. Sometimes a select audience. As an artist and an art
teacher I don't set out to paint a painting that will be seen by
everyone I set out to paint a painting because I have a drive to
put down a message that's important to me. Often no one else see's
it when it's done. I think I'm rambling but thats my two cents
Renee
Renee--Priceless words, worth a lot more than $.02. My mom's a watercolor artist and you are absolutely right--she does not set out to paint for everyone to see, she paints to place her artistic message onto the canvas--her mindset--that is not programmed to please others. I've been encouraging her though to let us see some of the stuff she hides. It is quite good and I'm certain your hidden art is very good as well.

We live in a world where great artists die broke. Unfortunate in my mind. Just like many moms who stay home to care for young children and teachers like yourself who teach our students--these folks are not properly rewarded financially. Not a fair world. We can only hope that things will change and more equity is spread out to the things that are really important that you represent--children, learning and art.

Your words are very important and appreciated and go in the works we're writing!

Thanks for your post.

Thanks for your kind words, I am sometimes reluctant to participate in any conversation because some people can come on strong. I don't want an argument I just want to read opinions. How else do we learn if we don't listen to what other people say? Of course you have to make up your mind if the information is pertinant (sp?) to you, but that's a great freedom we have. I felt strongly enough about art to comment. A very interesting thread and great exchange of ideas.

I won't get into the definition of art, but here's some of my
stuff. (all copyright 2001 Rod Graves, blah blah blah)

There's only a couple photos I would consider "art" there. The rest
are just indulgent photo-fun.

What do you guys think?

Rod,

Not sure these are the ones you would consider art --but my 2 favorites were Winter Wait and Photons 2 -- if you entered them in my opinion you would have a good shot at winning a photo art contest -- depending on the category of course--- and depending if you considered them art yourself ----but the thread is not over yet..... and who is going to judge this thing....after all.... photo art is subjective........and likely in this thread most of us will be winners because we spent some time here...

Rod--your flash on your home site is amazing.....and shows you have a handle on the technology! Thanks for including the link so I could see your site. Thanks for your post!

Here the fishing boats still use them, Tillamook and Bandon are not working lighthouse. The rest are, and will continue to be for many years. Yaquina Harbor is now on again, and just got relisted with the CG after 93 years of not working.
I shoot Lighthouse, waterfalls, faces, ocean, anamals and flowers, and

and waterskiing snap shots
http://hohski.ohdrats.com/potd/Img_5951s
Four facinating head shots, but not quite as facinating as the group.
Why these 4?

I am not sure why I pick this photos, Just some stuff I had laying
around the web.
Like Lighthouse?

Quite a collection. I understand that without public support most
lighthouses have disappeared.

Went to your site, three broswers later got it to work, but the fancy graphics are not why I go to a page. Your art, don't even rember now, to much trouble getting there.
Sorry everyone for being negative. (this is not an old junk machine)

Sorry to hear that. It should work fine in anything with Flash, and that's something like 95% of browsers. I had tested it for IE/Netscape 4+ in Win 98/2000/XP/MacOS9/X.

The site is part of my sig - I was really just using the pbase photos in my comment.

Well, Rod, I would consider most of your pics art. the PBase albums were facinating. I like much of your editing and your site was a real trip.

Being a critter freak I tried to ID your 7 legged spider but came up short. I'm not very good without a top and face view. It's definitely a male and possibly a funnel weaver or ?

Techniques with photoshop such as above with black this time are
sometimes necessary to turn a "documentary photo" into a photo that
brings forth the opportunity for art. Without blackening the
background with ps techniques in this photo, the extraordinary
beauty of this bride's veil would not be seen.

http://pages.prodigy.net/rmcelheny/julie2.htm
OTOH, while you made the veil "pop" the "fuzzy crop" of the front of the bride was distracting. It made me think you were hiding something. I realize from the second photo that is not the case, but looking at only the first one I would have thought the bride was visably pregnant instead of focusing on the veil.

You are right--I am hiding something--the person standing next to her--and I agree it wasn't the best, but better than the back of another person..

Alright folks --let's have some fun. Answer 1 through 4 below:

1) Please define Photographic Art....
Here is my definition--You want to blow up the picture in size--;
you want to frame it; folks besides family and friends like to look
at it; it has an interesting and important theme or principle to
it; it is quite unique; you might win the fair with it.

2) Give an example if you like:
Here is mine--I call it "A little girl dreams about being the big
girl"

http://pages.prodigy.net/rmcelheny/dolfin.htm

I used photoshop magic wand, dropper, bucket, etc to blue out the
background where lots of people mingling and one guy had a beer.

3) Suggest one of your favorite photo art gallerys--here is one of
mine:

http://www.outbackphoto.com/places/2001/20010920_local_safari.html

4) Comment politely on the nice folks that post their
comments/photos.
Let's not stir too much on this one like we did with "Predictions
on the Winners" But let's learn from each other on this. Photo
art is my hobby and I want to learn from forum friends!

Best regards,

MAC

Yes--you are right Antoine, one can feel the emotion in these, which makes them art.

What camera model? These are wonderful.

her--and I agree it wasn't the best, but better than the back of

Ahhh.. Yeah, you are right then. You might try an oval border just outside the fade effect. It might help frame the pic a little and help with the "secrecy" feeling.

1) Please define Photographic Art....
Art in general is hard to define. However, the easiest definition is in the fact that it takes creativity to do. I think that is why so many people do not see photography as art. They can take their disposable cameras and do the same thing as any photographer, where as not everyone could pick up a paintbrush and make a painting. However, it only takes looking at some really BAD pix to realize what the difference is.
2) Give an example if you like:
I have taken plenty of good shots that I didn't think about creatively before I took them. However, I have some (IMHO) better than good shots that I worked to create. Here are some of the more artistic ones (again IMHO.)

I realize that it is overexposed. However, it really was THAT BRIGHT. It was overexposed to my naked eye too. I was taken by it and tried several setting to get it right. I wanted to make the background black itself out in-camera.

I did PSE around with this one to reduce noise and hot pixles. This was taken out into the middle of Lake Michigan with NO other light. It was a fun experiment in long exposures.
3) Suggest one of your favorite photo art gallerys--
Well I think it's a little arrogant for me to post a link to my own site as a favorite gallery. However, I don't frequent any online gallerys so it's the only one I have. Everything on this site was taken over the last 7 mos or so when I got my first digital camera (DSC-P1.) In June I picked up the CD300 and so there is a mix from there out. A lot of it I did not think about very much when I took the pix. Now I am working much harder at the creative and technical aspects to improve.
