Just received my rebate from canon. I had a receipt for a D30 purchase in Sept 01. They sent me a 340 microdrive and not the 1 gig as was offered in the rebate. Any recommendations on how to deal with this mess? Thanks, Fred

Call Canon USA and make sure they know the problem. Canon is an EXCELLENT company and they just "screwed up." Knowing them, I bet they let you keep the 340 when they send you the 1 gig.

Fred,

I today also received my rebate ... it also was a 340 microdive instead of the 1 gig. I don't buy the mistake thing ... but I'll be on the phone in the morning to find out!

I am sorry to here that others have had to deal with this. There are no 800 numbers or other customer support numbers on their site. This is not surprising, but I will get to the bottom of this and, if not, then Canon will pay in terms of their reputation. UPS would not leave the package, so I had to spend 30 minutes to drive across town to pick it up. When Canon screws things up, they cost all of us time, money, frustration, and a downtun in loyalty. They better let me keep the 340 for the trouble. Any Canon support numbers would be much appreciated. Thanks, Fred.

This is all very interesting.

I mailed my rebate at the end of June and received a return receipt card dated 7-11-01 with the signature of J. Fisher. I've called Canon twice and have been told to continue to be patient...they claiming that it would take 8-10 weeks for processing.

Can anyone explain what's going on here? Have I been lied to?

Fred,

I just called Canon and was told basically tuff cookies. They say mine is an isolated instance and for me to pack it up, ship it back to New York with a letter of explanation and they will see what they can do.

This is where I was told to send it:

Canon

ATTN: Sue Turner (who doesn't except personal phone cals)

C/O Camera Divsion
1 canon Plaza
Building A
Lake Success, NY 11042

If you find out anything please post it ... I wasn't all that upset when I called, I figured just a mistake ... Now I am ticked (gross understatement!)

Just called Canon and spent 20 minutes talking to someone without a clue and then he told me to call tech support. Right now I am on hold for tech support. If I get the same response as Carroll, it will all out war with Canon. This is baloney. This is no mistake. And when the volumes of people affected by this bait an switch start posting it will be a failed public relations campaign for Canon. I will call my D30 dealer and let him know I want to return my camera and accessories and he has Canon to blame for this. I have never heard of anything this bad from Nikon. This is very, very, very, poor.

Just contacted Canon Tech support and they were clueless and tried to pull off the same stunt that Carroll reported either return it or I could call and speak to a supervisor tommorrow and I will do this. If I have to pay for shipping and insurance costs to send this back this is a ripp off. If Canon was a legitimate organization like Nikon or Dell, they would have overnighted the 1 gig drive and would have paid the return shipping for the 340 drive. This obviously was no mistake (anyone that could read english would have seen the 1 gig rebate card and my sept 01 purchase reciept) and Canon is playing the odds that people will not want the hassle of returning their drive. This has always been the rebate gamble that companies play. But this has gone way too far. Apparently, Canon had a stockpile of 340 drives that they could not get rid of and decided on this marketing strategy. Shame on you Canon!!!! Shame on you!!!!!!! Talk about anti American. If you are thinking of buying a Canon D30 because of the 1 gig rebate, you might want to rething your strategy. I may never buy another Canon product as long as I live. Good luck is all I can say. Thanks, Fred

Hey Fred, I feel for you but you need to get a grip on yourself. Bad attitudes (no matter how just they may be) rarely get you much of anything. People do NOT want to deal with pissed off people and in writing it sounds just as bad.

As a side note, I sent in a rebate card at least 2 months ago and am still waiting on my rebate for a lens and power booster that I bought.

Rebates are ALWAYS a hassle. And though it's not right that people have to have this attitude, but I NEVER use the rebate offer as a consideration to a purchase......there are just way too many factors to apply. All they have to say is that they never got it.....what can you do?

Anyway. I do understand how you feel, I dont think you should keep the 340 drive, but you should get the 1G that your rebate promised.....and they can't say that they didn't get the rebate card you sent right?

Things like this are bad, but I highly doubt that the "company" did it on purpose. Things like this can probably be attributed to a few people within the company though and hopefully, if it is something other than a few isolated instances they get what they deserve and so will their customers.

Hey Fred, I work and live in Miami so I hear that latin temper rising :) Now that you vented stay persistant, you have no reason to lose and every reason to win. Go up the steps to the supervisor and higher. I just bought a D30 so you are spearheading this for a lot of us folks. I haven't even sent my rebate in yet. If we need to start a campaign we will. There are lots of people on this forum that can make their phones ring all day long. Even folks that haven't bought a camera recently can call them. Keep us posted. Don't give up the ship, they can't touch your talent.

Well, if the rebate says 1 gig drive, you should be getting a 1 gig drive. Did you receive a 1 gig drive? No? Ok, then Canon has not fulfilled the rebate, keep that 340 gig gift they sent you for no apparent reason and tell them you have not received your 1 gig drive. There is no need to talk about the 340 gig drive as it is not the item mentioned in the rebate. If they want to play games with consumers, we can play games back.

I'm not 100% sure here but it's my understanding that if a company sends you something you did not order/request, it is yours to keep. You did not order or request a 340 meg drive so thats very nice of Canon. Now, wheres that 1 gig drive mentioned in the rebate?

I think you are all missing the boat. Fred never got a 340MB drive nor did he call them regarding it. He is putting you all on! He is a regular on bashing Canon and promoting Nikon.

That's a good point and a different way of seeing things I suppose. I'm not sure of the laws so I don't know if you can legally keep it or not. I think it's highly unlikely though. Without getting into a huge debate that only Judge Judy can settle I'll kindly disagree with you but only partially :)

It makes me wonder since I'm talkin' the talk if I'd walk the walk. If think I'd probably demand to keep the 340 too.

I'll casually duck away now and get back to the important things in life before Judge Judy starts yelling at me.

I can't figure out how you would know this. I clicked on 'Fred' to see the posts and there were only the posts in this thread. How do you know that this Fred is the same Canon basher that you've seen before? Forgive my ignorance, I'd just like to know how you know.

Well, I wouldn't even bother MENTIONING the 340. The sole point here is that the product promised was NEVER received.

Hi Trevor,

I remembered the same scam from many months ago! Try writing to his email address in his profile and you will find there is no such person.

Keep the faith.

Hey Roger, I am doing this for everyones benefit on this forum. I did receive the 340 tonight and so did Carroll in an earlier post. I brought up Nikon and Dell because I have had excellent service from Dell and have heard good things about Nikon customer service. I have not posted before and did not post my email address. If this is a scheme by Canon, then there will be many, many, posts and it would behoove all of us to know about it to thwart future such schemes. How difficult was it to read my rebate card that said 1 gig microdrive in bold type and my reciept that said Sept. 1, 2001. Believe me, no one is that stupid. Apparently, Canon has a bunch of these drives and wants to unload them. They are next to worthless in terms of value and usefullness. I am willing to bet that within a couple of weeks you will see a littany of rebate subscribers crying for help and this will have spearheaded the effort. Many of these companies (and many people) are crooked and the only thing keeping them honest is their viability in the market. It they think that something might damage their reputation, they may do something to stop the bleeding. If they were serious about these being isolated mistakes, then why dont they overnight the drive and pay for the return shipping. This would go a long way towards repairing the rift at this point. If Canon would take responsibility for their mistake, they are on par with the Dells and the Nikons in terms of customer service. Take it for what it is worth. Fred.

Trevor good points. We will know in a week or so how many people have been affected by this and if this is a systematic effort to dump the 340. If this was happening to you, I would not say you had a bad attitude if you were upset about the lacadaisical attitude by Canon. Already, we have 2 people from the very first rebates that were sent in. I will do a poll on another thread to determine the extent of the problem. thanks, fred.

Come off it Fred, according to your story they haven't even acknowledged that they sent you a 340MB drive yet alone owe you a 1GB drive. Why would you now say all will be forgiven if they pay you to return the 340MB drive and send you the 1GB drive. Where are all the other people Canon lied to about the rebate? So far there is just you.

By the way, what about the other goodies you were supposed to receive in the rebate offer, you don't mention them. And why would Canon be as good as "Nikon" and "Dell" if they admitted their mistake? If they tried to cheat people why would admitting it make them as good as companies that were honest to begin with?

And how do you KNOW that Carroll received a 340MB drive as you state below or could it be that you know each other?

Fred, or whatever your real name is, just fax Phil a copy of your D30 sales receipt and a copy of your rebate form. I will be happy to "eat crow". Burt your story doesn't ring true.
