VOTING THREAD-CHALLENGE 18-EVERYONE PLEASE VOTE (this one is for real:)

Looking online at several sources, portrait means a graphic representation of a person or thing. It comes from portrayl, which means to represent something.
I don't believe I or anyone else have voted outside of this definition :-)
Hugs,
Flick.

My research shows this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&oi=defmore&defl=en&q=define:portrait

Don't agree with any of those, try this one:
http://www.biology-online.org/dictionary/portrait

How about this one:
http://onlinedictionary.datasegment.com/word/portrait

I couldn't find the word "thing" in any of these.

portrayal: a word picture of a person's appearance and character

I'm sorry you don't agree, but these took 10 seconds to pull and made up the first 4 in a google search, the 5th referred to image orientation.

Funny, in looking back at past galleries, I could not find a picture of a landscape in the "up-close" challenge and someone claiming is was an "up-close" picture of the planet earth. In the architecture challenge there wasn't a single image of the milkyway stating is was an architectural portrayal of the universe. There were no families or self portraits in fantasy or food challenges, claiming one's life is just a fantasy or we were just going to end up as worm-food.

I yield to the photographic abliity of everyone on this forum and am constantly amazed at the images. I've learned an exceptional amount from all those participating. I don't ever hope to win one of the challenges, because my style an abilities are not up to the standards here. But, when you have a challenge theme within the scope of my abilities, then redefine a complete genre of photography, it is a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who takes pride in the style.

Sorry Greggory, a portrait cannot be "anything." This is factually and artistically incorrect.

I apologize to anyone who takes offense to this or thinks I am insulting them, or thinks I am undermining the forum. I assure you it is not my intent.

Rick

Rick, I'm really sorry you feel like this. For what it's worth, i don't agree that your work isn't up to standard, and anyway, we all improve all the time. Some people winning the challenges haven't been phortographers for very long, so don't feel it couldn't be you.

The challenges aren't meant to be competitive except in a mild sense, so it seems a shame to get so upset about a difference of opinion regarding the definition of the challenge title. Anyway, Gregory stated quite clealry that the portrait didn't have to be of a person, so it's irrelevant, i feel, whether he's bent the rules or not - he's the moderator for this challenge so what he says goes, within reason: in other words, his rules are the ones we're following here. You were as much at liberty as anyone else to photograph something non sentient.
So let's get back to having fun and enjoying each other's work :-)

Flick, either I am not expressing myslef clearly or your not reading it with the correct intent, or a bit of both. This, though, is the second time you have referred to my "state of mind" as either "stressed" or "upset" in some way. Boy [girl] we are not only on different intellectual pages but emotional as well. I absolutely enjoy our discourse [spelling?] and look forward to it. Love your images, posts and helpful hint. I really enjoy them.

This started with my joke about you not having enough points for my entry. You defended your postion by stating Greggory's intent was clear; which is where it should have ended. Instead, you attempted [once again] to re-define a genre of photography. I simply pointed out your "research" was flawed and insulted anyone who takes the style seriously. You then said "it didn't really matter anyway." This brings me right back to why bother with a theme, "it doesn't really matter."

Taking oposing view points, having passion about one's belief and standing for them does not consititue stress nor does it make one upset. Instead, it makes you feel alive.

Rick.

Were you extending the voting period? We usually have a week to vote, then the winner usually gets the new challenge up the following Friday (or sooner). Nobody has voted for the last two days anyway.

If voting is closed, you need announce closure of the voting thread, then announce the results soonish.

You will also need to reorder the galleries so that the first five places are in prder at the beginning of each gallery.
Do you need any help with all this? Sing out if you do.
Flick.
