SB800 Bracket and advice please...

for the useful advice and links everyone, it is much appreciated. The pics also show what is obtainable from standard flash heads.

If I was to light full length, which flash would you recommend - Vivitar or Metz? I'm also interested as to how you meter the flashes. What would kick out similar power to one of my Bowens 500w?

Cheers

Other than output it doesn't make much difference. Important is that you can set different outputs manually, as with your strobes. Also look at the recycling time, which is longer than with studio flashes.
I'm also interested as to how you meter the
flashes.
I use either a Gossen Profisix or a Metz spotmeter. However, I rarely use them with digital. I set the lighting ratio by experience (Metz) or proportional modelling lights (Broncolor). If it's important I check it on my laptop. I set exposure through histogram/blinking highlights.

If you fire them into an umbrella I guess you need about eight SB800's (three stops difference). Check out these measurements:

This was shot through a Large Softbox with the the SB800 at full power. No bracket used, just placed the box on another box anheld it in place with some tape. The box is just out of the camera view. So f/11 is the max for this application anyway.

Useful post. This and the previous post pretty much illustrates what others have been saying. Although the Sb800 is a pretty good flash, I don't think it will be powerful enough for on location full length type fashion shots, but is fine used as fill flash.

I may look at picking up a cheap second flash anyway and take some of the advice given by others on the forum, but for the editorial it look like I will either have to go with the Bowens battery pack or a generator for my Geminis

Kind regards

Not all umbrella/flash brackets are compatible with Nikon SB-600 and SB-800 units, as the mounting foot will stay loose in the shoe. One of the brackets which works fine is made by Photoflex, and uses a simple side-mounted screw to hold the flash unit firmly in place. Hope that this helps.

This bracket works fine except you will need to get a different 'shoe' to hold the flashes "foot" as was mentioned below, the one here shown won't hold the sb-800, or I dare say an flash, securelly. The flash would just wiggle out easliy and go "bump in the night". The sb-800 has a plastice stand/shoe that holds the sb-800 pretty will using it's "lock" which is what I use now. I will say that I don't altogether trust it.

Strobframe has one, which I intend to get.

Can I use the SB 800 on my D2X as the Commander to control the two
slave units? Or do I need to buy the commander module in addition
to the two slaves?
SB 800 does can act as MASTER connected to the Camera, and the SU-800 is an optional Master (Commander called) improving distance (20/mt=66/ft. stated). They can act as REMOTE units, either an other SB800 and SB600 (which can not act as Master, yet). Remote units can be more ones.

Distance starts decreasing, if units turn off from "seeing" body-to-body while in large (empty) environment, because of the few (or no) reflection. The whole System is InfraRed Light controlled (no radio waves).
