I recently acquired a used Dicomed Field Pro scan back. In the hope someone on this forum may use / have used the same combination, I'd like to hear from them - its not the easiest setup to use (under Win2K, running Imaginator as the scan software) but it works. The issues I want to address include color management and batttery life.

Thanks

Hello Quentin,

We have a digital studio in Belgium, and we've had a demonstration of a Dicomed scanner back three yaers ago. I cannot help you when it comes to how to use the system .Color management is another issue that maybe I can help you with. When you want to calibrate your digital back, you will have to make a profile of it and insert this into the colour management of your system. To 'make' this input profile you need additional software, like for instance eye-one from Gretag-macbeth, this costs a lot of money though. There is another option if you work with a windows-machine. Check out http://www.aim-dtp.net , click on 'whats new' and look for xl-profiler. I haven't tried this software yet, but it could be very usefull for you. Check out the rest of the site also, it is the most detailed website about color management I have found on the web yet.

Hi Seppe,

I have a colour managed system and software (based around MonacoPROOF and a Spectrocam spectrophotometer). The problem is that Imaginator does not use ICC profiles, and I don't believe there is any way of applying ICC on another colour management system to the Dicomed (it may be a diffferent position on a MAC).

So really the issue for me is how to get the best from Imaginator (unless there is an alternative, which I doubt, as only a few hundred Dicomed scan backs were ever made, they cost so much). Man, this is temperamental software to use...

You should check out the BetterLight site..
I believe Mike Collette (Owner of BetterLight) designed the Dicomed Scan backs..
Many of the Dicomed users congregate on the site..

Hello Quentin, Seppe again,

If you have this profiling soft and hardware, it is possible, correct me if I'm wrong, for you to make a profile of your scanback under controlled lighting conditions like in a studio. In your software of dicomed you make the image as neutral as possible(gray balance the images), then you open your untagged(no assigned profile) in Photoshop 6 ( do not use earlier versions,CM has improved a lot in 6), If your CM policies are set to ask profile mismatches it will ask you what to do, then you choose Assign profile and you select the profile that you made for your scannerback and then convert to the working space, what in your case will likely be Adobe RGB 1998. Normally you get the best results using this workflow.
