Hi!

I've just started taking pictures with my D30 - saving them to a 1gb Microdrive. I've measured the transfer speed from the camera via USB to 259kb/sec, so far I understand I can get about 500-600kb/sec with a dedicted CF reader for USB today. But now when USB2 is launched I'd like a card reader for USB2 and get transerspeeds of 2000kb/sec or more ( I don't know the maximun speed of the microdrive ).

Anyone heard anything about any USB2 devices?

Best regards,

Nope.

It might be a while before we see USB2 card readers. You might be better off with a Firewire card reader which is available now and is much faster than USB1.

Mmm, the lovely thing about USB is that everyone got it. So when I visit friends etc then I can transfer the pictures directly.

Do you have any advice/recommendation on firewire PC CF-card readers? I think I have a firewire M/B ( the MSI 694D-Pro ) I only need to attach the contacts...

True, but USB2 is extremely rare and will probably remain so for some time. Firewire is more common at this time.

I would recommend Lexar if it's available in your country. If not, there are probably half a dozen brands available (Unity, PNY, ADS, etc.) and they're all made by Datafab and OEMed to the different brands. The only difference is the color of plastics and perhaps the included software. I recommended Lexar because it's commonly available and usually the least expensive in the US.

I recently went through a nightmare when changing from SM to CF.
My SM Microtech Zio worked just fine. Like an idiot I decided to try
a Sandisk. It crashed my computer. A lexar also crashed my computer.
I asked my computer guru about firewire. He told me to stay clear
and go back to Microtech USB. i did so. Worked fine, first time. Just
a heads-up: readers/usb can be very capricious.

Hi!

Updated info:

Ordered a "Tekram Firewire Video card" ie. a Firewire-card capable of 400mbits with 3 ports and a software from MGI. And I also ordered a "Datafab firewire CF reader".

With this firewire card I can borrow my friends digital videocamera and edit the videos 100% digital in the computer.

Checked IBM:s site about microdrives, they shoud be able to pump 4mb/sec in bursts and about 2.8mb/sec continues.

Will be back later with a review and some "benchmarks"

USB2 devices are compatible with USB1. This means that you can use your USB2 device with older USB1 ports in your computer.
