Hi,

I am new to DSLR and got a D50 a few weeks ago.

I am learning slowly and have just known about custom curves. I have installed Nkon Capture as well.

Before I start uploading the curves, I want to know whether I can actually use D70 custom curves on my D50. I think I can but I just want to make sure of this.

Thanks and regards,

Peter

There was a thread some time back that mentioned someone using a curve on a D50 with no problems. The fotogenetic curves I think were meant for both D100 and D70, so there doesn't seem to be any reason why it will not work on the D50.

I am interested in this too, specifically in the sReala2 curve, if it means it will temper the D50's tendency to blow highlights.

It sure should not hurt to try, but you might find the D50 does not need the curve like the D70 sometimes does. Since you have Capture, you might shoot some photos with it on and then in Capture, try it with the various contrast settings. I find that for most photos I actually prefer normal contrast, but I am going to try with the D70 shooting with EV of -1 and the sReala and see how that works. And don't limit your tries to normal. Try low and high contrast too. So far I prefer the sReala over the Fotogenetics.

Let us know how it goes.

Peter: All of the curves will work in the Nikon D50, but most of the better curves address given problems that people wanted to over come with the in camera curve of the D70. So by using these curves designed for these jobs you won't get what the author was going for in your results.

The d70 underexposes by aprox +3 and the D50 by -3. I have set both cameras to be fairly even on exposure...

The Nikon developers wanted the D50 to be better out of camera JPGS so the in camera curve is tuned for better out of camera shots. That's one reason why some folks would like their D70 to have a curve close to the D50.

Since Nikon had different ideas for the D70 they tried to allow the built in curve to no blow out highlights (some images look dark). These images are better suited in Post Processing and have the most information in the NEFS.
