DK-17M Available

Thanks, Brian.

I've been checking BH and Nikon Mall for some time now. The last time I ordered one from Nikon Mall they weren't really in stock (contrary to what the site said).

I actually made the sales rep check inventory before I placed my order. Well, my order arrived today :)

I just installed mine and it doesn't seem to do anything. I was under the assumption that the viewfinder would be noticably zoomed in from what I see in the lcd. From a quick check, this doesn't seem to be the case. If I take a picture of a ruler and frame it in the viewfinder such that the ruler exactly touches both edges of the frame, I'd expect that the actual shot would show some extra space on either end of the ruler. This is not the case. The lcd shows the exact same framing that I see in the viewfinder. For that matter, when I reinstall the regular eyepiece it seems like the same thing happens. What am I doing wrong?

It magnifies the image in the viewfinder.

I am really liking the extra size when composing an image, but having a little trouble getting the rubber eye cup back on solid (DK-2)

Does this cause a bit of a degradation of the viewfinder information characters (numbers, letters, etc.) on the bottom and on the right side of the viewfinder? I wonder if a readjustment is needed of the diopter once the DK-17M is installed?

The DK2 fits perfectly after you remove the rubber collar from the DK17m. Place the DK2 over the metal and the metal collar fits tightly-need a sharp fingernail, but the over all installation is very secure. I recall a discussion on this forum about the DK2 and the DK17m some time ago.

It does cut ever so slightly the info at the bottom IF your eye is not up tight to the camera (Eyeglass wearers might me in trouble?) and yes you do need to adjust the diopter after the DK-17 is installed.

Maybe I'm screwed up. So it just makes the image in the viewfinder bigger? It doesn't actually change what you see in the viewfinder but just makes it bigger? I thought it just cropped the viewfinder image and enlarged it. But what you're saying is that it doesn't crop but makes the viewfinder larger.

Thanks,
Shad

You're welcome.

Raymond was correct regarding the eyeglass users. I find myself "looking around" the viewfinder with my glasses on. Although I think it is a great accessory otherwise. Much easier to manual focus with it.

It makes the view in the viewfinder larger, I would guess as large as Nikon could go without cropping the info around the image.

If you can get you face in tight to the camera I see NO cropping of the shooting info.
