Iis this lens kind of klunky making handheld pictures difficult. Meaning the awkwardness of the lens might contribute to not being able to hold to camera steady enough for handheld shots. (blurring etc.) Am I better of with the tce2 ? Thanks in adavance. Tom

Tom,

I have the tce3 and handhold it all the time. It is large, but it very easy to get great pictures without a tripod, I use it more without a tripod than I do with one. I've never used the tce2 but I have had a B300 1.8X lens on and the 3X is very close in size and weight.
Hope this helps

I use the TC-E3 lense regularly at motorcycle races and get very good hand-held results, at shutter speeds normally at 1/500 or 1/1000 on my 990. Here is a sample:

Hi Tom,

I have the 990 and TC-E3, it is a very good lens and I often use it hand held, but in lower light it can be better with a tripod (although I have shot hand held at 1/30 second and it has come out fine).

The TC-E2 is more compact but has a lot less zoom.

If you have the 995 you may find the TC-E2 more versatile because of the 995's 4x zoom, the TC-E2 gives you about the same zoom level as the 990 with the TC-E3.

If you have the 990 and want the highest zoom get the TC-E3, or you could get both... this would be the ideal solution but it does cost a bit.

Yours sincerely,

I use the TC-E2 far more often than the TC-E3 when I have both with me. Yes the E3 is longer, but it doesn't zoom back as far as the E2 so you REALLY have to want that tele shot to use it. Neither cut down on the light more than clear eyeglasses, so that's not a factor at all. In fact, to get clear performance like this they had to make those front lenses as big as they are.

Incorrect. Set the lens converter option to each and you can read the wide point in the playback data overlays.

The E2 covers more of the camera's zoom span than the E3 does. The E2 is useful over the camera zoom range of 14.1 to 31 mm. The E3 is useful over the camera zoom range of 19.6 to 31 mm. Similarly shortened zoom range is found on the 990 where the E3 is useful from 17.5 to 22.4 mm and the E2 from 13.0 to 22.4. The E2 always gives you more zoom.

Hi Peter,
Yes you are correct, I wasn't meaning what it sounded like. :-) Sorry.

I meant that if you require the far end of the zoom range then the TC-E3 is better. I have the TC-E3, but would love to get the TC-E2 for the very reason you stated... you can zoom out to a much wider field of view. I did use a TC-E2 for a while and it was very nice.

Actually this brings up something I was wondering. How many stops slower are these lenses? Typically in an slr the 2x converter will cut your light in half (1 stop), but they go between the lens and shutter.

Hi Rick,

They don't cut out any light and it is the same f stop as it is without the lens on (on a 990 it is f4 at full zoom). This is obtained by the fact that the lenses are funnel shaped and go out to a large diameter, allowing all the light in.

Well, I wondered about that. It seems the local digital camera "expert" at a high end store just guessed! Thanks!
