D200 - Too little too late?

S3 is SLOOOOW plastic- bodied camera.
I don't care if it's made out of plastic. My plastic cameras have outlasted their usefulness. Even my plastic N70 from 1996 is still going strong. I'm tired of people bashing composite materials.

In the end, what really matters are the photos...not whether a car can run over your camera and have it still be working.
D200 is FAST 10MP
weather-sealed rugged camera.
Who said it was weather-sealed? Just because it has advertised O-rings doesn't mean a thing. I don't doubt its improved moisture resistance, but who here shoots in the rain?
s3pro has same MP as D50 (6MP). Why have you spend $2500 for a
mere 6MP camera?
Bashing a D50? What on earth is wrong with a D50? I have a D50 and it's a fine camera. I kept it over a 20D.

You obviously don't appreciate why someone would chose an S3 over these speed beasts. You see, it's about final image quality. A quality that no other brand can match.

They had to find a balance and 1.5x appears to be that balance. If 1.3x were the DX form factor, then you people would be complaining about why Canon and Nikon don't offer a 1.2x crop sensor. It just never ends.
the best would have been a 1.3 crop,
a pity Nikon would not give us a sensor like Canon 1d

I played with D200 yesterday at Bangkok's camera store. Like the D70s, this cam is built in Thailand. I like the camera so much. Realy nice color out of the camera and noise up to iso800 is good. Noise characteristic of D200 is look like those of film. I printed one pic (iso 500) at 16x24 without any noise reduction and it seems fine to me. The firmware is: bank A version- 1.000 bank B version is 1.002a. So I guess, the firmware should be done (or close to) but they still have to release an update Capture to read the camera's raw. Only jpeg just for now.

Hi Thom, I hope you don't mind a question directed to you. This is kind of like my search for the fountain of youth.

I've been shooting Fuji for a relatively long time (4900, S602, 2300, A330, S1, S2, F700) and I am very pleased with the way it reproduces skin tones (especially with flash). I was wondering if you knew of a way to get those kind of results on a camera like the D50, D70, or this D200. Everytime I switch brands (20D, 1D, 7D, D50) I get really excited about the new camera for a few days, and then I realize that I miss those Fujifilm colors. I spend hours messing with the settings and it just isn't the same as Fuji.

Is there any way to get that Fujifilm look without using a Fujifilm camera? I wish there was a plug-in I could use in Nikon Capture or Capture 1 that could emulate Fujifilm's color processing.

I wish Fuji would come out with a camera with the speed and power of these new DSLR's.
I am a Nikon user and have a D70 and S3 pro kit. Being honest when
looking at the D200 other than shooting speed and iTTL I am
confident my S3 will deliver as much res and most likely more
pleasing images to the eye than the D200 and that is without
considering dynamic range.
You're judging a camera before we've actually seen how it performs.

Good points Thom. I have heard good things about the D50 maybe worth a look, would need to buy some new memory though as I believe it does not take CF cards?

The lack of MLU on the S3 is probably the only reason I feel the need for another camera for my stock although opinion seems divided as to whether mirror slap is an issue on the S3 (my images look pretty good but then I have no comparison).

I would say however that the Sony R1 does not need MLU as it does not have a mirror! The DP review preview however did not seem overly impressed with it's overall res which appears more like 8 mp than 10 mp (maybe the production model will be better?) I really like the idea of a high quality non SLR for my stock landscapes, no dust and no mirror slap, live preview etc etc. If the lens is up the job I am interested but would always want a DSLR for other purposes.

???

I think the opposite. The option of wide-area AF is awesome! It's just like the N70's system, but with more AF points.

That's one of the biggest issues I have with Canon and Minolta DSLR's. Their AF points are so small that you have to waste time looking for something of reasonable contrast for the AF system to lock onto.

Why you say it's slow is a mystery to us all. Even the AF system on the D50 is blazing fast!
It's gonna be slow focusing for those that need it to be lighting
fast.

If you are a Nikon shooter then I only care about what Nikon has to
offer me and the SYSTEM I have invested in.
I for one could careless and I think a
lot of others here feel the same.
What if Canon came out with a camera that enabled you to take better pictures?

Define better? Well, let's say you agree that in some situations, there is such a thing as the decisive moment. One micro second too soon and one micro second too late and you've missed the shot. Well, to me, the body with the superior AF system and minimal lag will get THE shot.

I'm not denying that your camera can get THE shot, but the better camera will get 1000 times as many of those shots. It's just like the guy that claimed he could do as well with a 20D as a D2x shooter. Nonsense I say.

Obviously, you chose the camera for the job. If that requires getting a Canon, so be it.

I know there are those idealists out there that sing, "It's not the equipment that counts, it's the photographer!" But get real. If tech didn't matter, what's up with this D200 madness?

I also think most people upgrade because there's just created a
need. Not many people "need" more than the D70, IMO. Many of us
want something more, though :-)
And I think the D50 is more camera than most need. And by most, I mean the masses that randomly walk into Best Buy and pickup one of these things to take pictures of their new baby.

I remember when that camera was the EM.

I am a Nikon user and have a D70 and S3 pro kit.
Why the biggest trolls fit this profile perfectly? They are users of the brand they rant about, although they dislike it.
Being honest when
looking at the D200 other than shooting speed and iTTL I am
confident my S3 will deliver as much res and most likely more
pleasing images to the eye than the D200 and that is without
considering dynamic range.
Why all these trolls have to remind us that they are being honest? LOL!!! Anyway, congrats to you. Since you already have an S3 you can keep using it. Just remember this thread when you do not get the picture because the buffer is full or the AF too slow.
I also shoot landscapes for stock and
have been waiting for a digicam that is competive resolution wise
without weighing and costing as much as a house (D2x 1DS mkII) at
£570 the Sony R1 looks a credible alternative to the D200 (for this
type of photography only I am not advocating a digicam over a DSLR)
but as I have said on another thread my S3 is probably still better
than both of them.
Why are you the second guy who tries to compare a Sony R1 to a DSLR in the last days? But, of course, both of you said you were not comparing. The comparison is just nonsense, plain sillyness. Making it shows what you know about what you're talking about: nil, zip, nada, nothing. And about the S3, of course your high DR 6mp piece of slow plastic for $2500 is superior. So keep it and again, remember us when your buffer is full and your AF too slow. Oh, and your viewfinder too small.
8mp to 10mp is not a massive jump 8mp to 12mp is and at £1300 the
D200 looks expensive to me.
D200 sounds expensive to you and S3 doesn't? Are you being honest now? Cm'on, stop trolling...
The D100 was a competitor of the D60
and 10D, the D200 is a really in the same class as the 20D (and 30D
when it appears) I also predict that we will see a Canon 30D, 40D
and maybe even a 50D before we see a D300.
Your predictions make me really nervous. I only plan to use my D2x for the next two months and then feel the urgent need to upgrade it. There will be nothing to upgrade it with and I'll have to buy an S3. ROFL!!!
This is not a Nikon vs
Canon thing but just something to consider for the enthusiast or
semi pro who wear out or replace bodies on a regular basis.
No, it's not even that. Is simply a bunch of cr@p written by a troll.
Don't get me wrong I may still buy one but I also may buy another
S3 instead. It's going to be an interesting few months.
Nobody is getting you wrong. It's pretty clear what you are doing. If you, on the other hand, want to be taken seriously, try not to say one stupidity after another, contradicting yourself every other paragraph. You are not even original.

Don't look left or right?
Good idea. I'm still riding a horse to work while the guy next to
me is riding a x horsepower BMW. I don't care, I'm heavily invested
in saddles.
Tim with all due respect your analogy makes no sense. The purpose of an analogy is to draw a parallel to some thing everyone understands.

First of all the gap between a horse and a BMW is about a 100 years. You are comparing day and night, how can that be relevant ?

The difference between Canon and Nikon technology is so slight that zealots are arguing over 2 megapixels or FF vs DX. This is like arguing over whether Word is better than Wordperfect. Both have more features than anyone could possibly use and the number of advantages one has over the other is so slight and based on personal preference that it is meaningless. You could take a dart board and throw at it to pick the product and neither would be the wrong choice.

As an analogy that is much closer to reality. If you go out and buy a 42" Panasonic Plasma HDTV today with 1024x768 resolution and JVC comes out with a 40" with 1366x768 are you going to haul your Panasonic to the dump and buy the JVC ? Is Panasonic a horse and buggy company because of JVC's latest product ?

Now this would only make sense if JVC released their product at Half of the price of the Panasonic. An in my opinion this is almost what Nikon has done to Canon. The D200 "appears" to be incredibly close and wins in some areas to the 5D. So at almost half the price Nikon has done an incredible job and is just another reason why I stick with Nikon as a company.

If it is one thing I have learned in the IT profession, you are always better off when you buy from a company that is going in the same direction as you are. Products come and go and buying based on a list of check boxes is a losing battle because the winners will always be neck and neck, its the company that makes the difference.

I have put my bets on Nikon and never looked back and so far my images have not suffered.

History judges great Photographers by their technique not their technology.

Dan, you're thinking along the same lines I have. I hope someone will be able to answer your question.

I, too, appreciate the speed of the D2h, but I still go back to the Fuji S2 for most shooting. I'm thinking that it should be possible to reverse-engineer a profile which could be applied to a D2h or D200 nef/jpg to give S2 -like colors. I think I'm gradually getting better at adjusting nefs (especially with the good controls of Nikon Capture), but it's trial & error.

all the worries of vignetting, corner softness, and CA. What's the point??? With 1.5x you get the center sharpness from any 35mm lens you choose......so, there is a crop factor that you have to deal with but, there are lenses to accomodate this issue.

Not to mention that the beautiful telephoto's from both Nikon and Canon get that same 1.5/1.6x boost.......without sacrifice of shutter speed. You can shoot digital 300mm with a 200mm lens at 1/200th of a second (assuming a typical lens without all the bells and wistles.)

The 5d wouldn't have been on my wish list even if I shot Canon (and, I almost went that way with the 20d......the D70 just had more bang for the buck).

I don't think I'll bother posting again people like you just are not worth the bother. I think my post has some valid points and are remember just my opinion, I don't think there is any call for the personal tone of your response.

I don't even know what a troll is!

If you had taken the time to read the thread you will have seen the context which my R1 comment was made in which was as a landscape camera and that for other purposes a DSLR would be needed (and much better). If I could only own one camera then it would not be the R1. But horses for courses and as a landscape cam to take on hikes I think it is worth a look. If you think the S3 is a 6mp piece of slow plastic then you really have no place contributing to this thread.

I'll just let this one run it's course....... thanks to those who have been objective in their responses.

I guess you're right, lol! :-)

But even looking at the dedicated amateur group in the DSLR marked, most of them would have everything they need in a D70. JMHO. (Still, I'm getting the D200...)

Thomas.

Having used and been disappointed with a D30 for the last 3 years, I'm going to switch. I'll ive it until after Xmas and then buy 2 bodies, 2 battery grips, an 18-70 and a 70-200 2.8, plus a Nikon flash.

Pending reviews of course.

Si.

Ignore those party poopers. They're just trying to get a reaction out of you.

These types of posts often help us learn things. It opens our minds to others' perspectives.

For me this camera is exactly what I wanted. I need low noise up to ISO800, professional but light body, better AF and around 10MPs. This is a digital F100.

No negitive waves here. I am very happy with Nikon and have
preordered the D200. Now off for my bird flu shot. : )

I'm first in line at F11.
