D200 - Too little too late?

I couldn't agree more. Look at the number of pros that continued to use the D1 long after more megapixels were available in other models. There are certain disadvantages to using too many MPs also. If you're composing pictures in the camera and not so much in the afterprocessing, having all those extra megapixels is a drag. Larger files, fewer pics on the cards, slower transfers, slower postprocessing etc. etc. Especially if you don't intend to make big posters 10MP is more than enough. The rest of the camera's features compared with the very agressive pricing is much more interresting! Sure looks like a real winner to me.

IMO the D200 is right on time.

One year ago it would have been "the bomb", "the killer machine" everybody was anticipating.

But Nevertheless, it's a great camera at an attractive price point. And for the sake of brand bashing: Currently it kills the 20D flat out.

With Canon's product cycle we can expect the 30D within a few weeks, the latest at PMA. The 30D will probably slightly exceed the D200. (probably better MP specs. Otherwise, if I were a Canon user I would feel completely ripped off by Canon's marketing stunts: 6 -> 8 -> 10 MP)

So, right now with the D200 we have the best deal on market which will be competitive for the next two years. (unless Canon does something really 'crazy' and delivers the 30D with FF sensor)
 
S3 is SLOOOOW plastic- bodied camera. D200 is FAST 10MP weather-sealed rugged camera. You cannot compare them with just MP counts.

If what you need is MP count, try a used 14n.

BTW s3pro has same MP as D50 (6MP). Why have you spend $2500 for a mere 6MP camera?
 
Its higher rez than the D70, Its weatherproof, its quick, crop sensor, small, and my only worry, is it quiet...

For wildlife this is close to my ideal camera...

This back and forth crystal ball predictions about what Canon will come out with is a waste of time. Who cares !!!

If you are a Nikon shooter then I only care about what Nikon has to offer me and the SYSTEM I have invested in. Everyone whined about how long it has taken Nikon to come up with a replacement for the D100. Now they announce yet another home run product and the trolls come out of the woodwork to predict what Canon will do.

So if you want to go on and on about Canon then please go to that forum and enjoy yourself. I for one could careless and I think a lot of others here feel the same.

If I got it right and then you test a D200 - don't forget countless Nikonians here are awaiting your report!

more than a maturing market. Still there will be lots of things done w. sensors re niose that will help but this is a affordable camera that will satisfy most users for ever.

It will lead to a saturated market some day me thinks. The boom days of 18month obsolesence is about over maybe thank God. We can eturn to the days of everybody using a camera for decade?

I was sure for years I would get a Canon DSLR at some point( I have an S400 and a G6).

If I were buying today, this would probably be it.

What more do you need? 10 or 12 MP makes almost no difference. 10 relatively clean is all I could hope for.

From what I read in the preview, I get the distince impression that this body is a step up on the canon 20d and gives the D2x a run for its money. The only potential mis-step here is canabalizing some D2x sales.

The only thing that Canon could do now is release a 1.3 crop in the same price range. That would get me, because unlike most I am neither a fan of 1.5 or FF. I think 1.3 is the best compromise.

I love pentax... And no I am not about to jump ship.....

But let me speak as an outsider... If I had to choose between this 200D and the Canon 5D, it would be the Nikon.

Fist of all, it is cheaper. Same class or not, for the price of the 5D I'd expect a whole lot more. First of all would be actually some kind of sealing.

Would not dream of buying a usd 3.000 + camera without at least some protection... Great move by Nikon...

Plus on the Pentax forum it is repeately said that, while they may not work in the same way, both Pentax and Nikon have a somewhat similar appearing 11 pot focusing system...

I am a Nikon guy but owned s2 and Kodak SLR/n , now D2X.
I abslotutely agree : the best would have been a 1.3 crop,

a pity Nikon would not give us a sensor like Canon 1d and now it is late the DX lens are not designed to give optimal coverage to a bigger sensor

We'll know it's a maturing market when either Canon or Nikon comes out with a body having fewer but larger photosites so as to reduce the high ISO noise and increase DR.

How many wedding photographers need a 12 or 16 mp body? Wouldn't a 6mp body with the latest technology give you a better 8x10 print?

If a wedding photographer could run at 3200 ISO inside the church and not have to use flash, that's a selling point, it seems to me.

I think I read somewhere on this board, that the DX lenses would be able to cover up to 1.2-1.3.

Good idea. I'm still riding a horse to work while the guy next to me is riding a x horsepower BMW. I don't care, I'm heavily invested in saddles.
 
I totally agree with you.

I dont really care what Canon comes out with to replace the 20D. All I care is that Nikon now has got it act together, and is delivering on its tradition. For people like me, it is really really wonderful to see Nikon remembering its statements like the F mount will be both forward and backward compatibile. Now with an AI-Couple ring.. Every lens I have dating back to my modified AI lenses of circa 1975 are still usable. Wonderful lenses like 105 1.8 are back in the arsenal, without have to spend on the D2x.

This is an example of one thing that always keeps me in the Nikon system. The engineers in R&D are really passionate about their art.

I dont care if Canon comes out in Jan, with a 16MP 1.6Crop 30D. Does it make a difference to the many of us Nikon users? Nope.

We all forget that the camera is a tool to help us capture a fleeting moment, freeze a moment in time. To document the world we live in.
 
if the 5d was a 'revolution' in delivering full frame at half the price, then the D200 is easily the same in the ergonomics department.

NOTHING comes close to this cameras build quality. the D100, D70s, S2, S3, 20d et al.. are like kids toys.

its a PROFESSIONAL body for $1700! THAT's the real upgrade here. Sure, I would have liked a couple more megapixels myself, but I can tell you my buddy who does weddings could care less. he's been dying for a lightweight 5 fps pro body, and now he has it.

Nikon once again shows you what it thinks is more important. Megapixels or Ergonomics? As an admitted megapixel whore myself, even I have to admit, I have to go with the body that feels right.

If Canon has "claimed" high iso as its territory, than with the D200, Nikon has just claimed build quality. Nikon is the Apple of camera bodies, ha ha.
