OK, now that I have ordered my first digital camera (Dark Angel) How will i be able to d/l my images to my computer? I have a dinosaur of a PC ( an original PII-200) , I will be getting a new one soon, but what do I do in the meantime?

Is buying a MemoryStick floppy adapter the only/best solution? Anyone have a good workaround til my new PC arrives?

The floppy adapter is very slow and the F707 files can be quite large. In my opinion, having a reasonably fast computer is a prerequisite to a having a good digital camera (not only for USB, but to view and edit the pictures at a reasonable speed).

What a shame but true, that a 3-4 year old PC is a "dinosaur"

Depending on what OS you are running (Win95 OSR/Win98), you should be able to install a USB card into an expansion slot. I think the PII era started to see some USB integration.

It should be better than the floppy adapter until the new system comes along.

Good luck

The USB standard was pretty much finalized by 1996, so your board may have USB support even if it doesn't have USB ports, if the board isn't ATX form factor. Also since Windows 95 (and other OS's) at the time didn't have USB support, so often USB is overlooked. Check your motherboard manuals, you may be able to simply get a USB bracket for it.

Or you can just get a PCI USB card. (Opti is good)

FWIW my 1997 system running a P166 MMX turned out to have onboard USB connectors (ATX), but I'd never been aware of them over the first two years because the rear cover plate didn't have cutouts to allow access to them!

On finally discovering this, I provided access and voila, USB. Support first appeared with it under the second release (OEM) of Win 95 in October 1996:

Thx Mike....from reading that article, it would seem that I would need to upgrade to W98/ME for a better support. Im pretty sure i d/l SP 2.1 but i should double check.

Waht does the USB connector look like on the MoBo?

Yes I expect it would be more likely to get up and run without hassles. I tried mine out of curiosity, as I had a Wacom tablet ready for when I had planned to upgrade the whole machine about a month later. So I didn't give it a very long trial, but no problem with the tablet or my Epson 900. Win 98SE followed soon after, then the general hardware upgrade.

On an ATX board the typical arrangement is a squarish connector block, next along from the mini-DINs for mouse and keyboard, providing two standard Type A USB sockets stacked vertically with the long sides of the sockets parallel to the MoBo -- imagine a pair of floppy drives stacked together, and then reduced to about 1/8 scale. The Type A socket is a slot approx 12 x 4.6 mm.

As I said, typical -- no doubt there are other layouts in more compact board configurations.

Mike,

Thanks, i will crack the case and give a look-see. Maybe I can slap something temporary together.

Another issue to consider is that Sony don't seem to support a USB driver for WIN95. Even the OEM versions that do support USB. I'm not sure if the 707 comes with a '95 compatible driver, but the S85 certainly doesn't. Also no support on the Sony Support sites.

At the moment I download my pics thru a compaq ipaq (PDA) USB, and then via Infrared to my 95 loaded laptop. Hell of a process
