New G2 return or not

I've had my G2 two days now and have been putting it through its paces. A friend took some pics today that showed some consistent spots where hot pixels appeared (see the link below). I ran the hot pixel tests at various ISO and shutter speeds and determined that I have a cluster of 9 hot/stuck pixels and one single hot pixel that are consistent from 1 to 1/60 sec exposures and at different ISOs.

Can I assume that these will not go away or get better since they appear in every picture?

Part of me thinks I am being petty since I can fix it in PS in a sec. On the other hand I paid $800 for a camera . . . it should work right!

Anyone have an opinion? Would you return? I can actually see the cluster on the LCD panel (or coincidentally there is also a stuck pixel on the LCD at about the same location.)

These pics were taken in auto mode Large-Fine-JPG. The hot pixels are in the exact location noted by the hot pixel test.

You can also check out my other album of macro shots I took yesterday (and one squirrel with red-eye . . . doh!). Other than slight curves adjustments in PS these are straight from the camera (Large-Fine-JPG). I have NO photographic experience which is a testament to the ease of use of this camera.

Vaughn,

At first I thought you were over-reacting, but my God, I DO see the hot-pixels, - holy hell, my stomach dropped !, - I pray that I don't have these on my G2, and don't recall seeing any so far. I have an old 3 year old Epson digital cam, and have never ever seen a hot pixel - what does this say for companies ? - that the level of quality is getting worse ?

I would be returning the camera and get a replacement ASAP, how many pictures have you taken with the cam, and do all images have these hot-pixels ?

I'm now afraid to even do a "hot-pixel" test.

I have only taken about 80 pictures with the camera. Looking back at some of the first ones, you can see evidence of the cluster. Obviously if that part of the image is not a solid color it is more difficult to see.

Since these pixels are always hot they are called stuck pixels. Hot pixels appear in longer exposures (In G-2 below the noise reduction shutter speed of 1.3 sec) and are seen only as the camera CCD heats up. It is very common but to varying degrees. For a big sploch of stuck pixels Canon, even if not your dealer, will honor a repair. They map out the stuck pixels with a computer and interpolate over those stuck. Hopefully your retailer will give you an exchange since the camera is quite new. Here is some reading on the topic.

Hey, I apologize for sounding stupid but I do not see a hot pixel in your pics. So, could some one explain what is hot pixel ? and where they are in these pics.. Thanks

Hi Mark

Its not stupid when you dont know how to check :-) Click on is picture It will open full size and you will see them.

Vaughn, If it was me, I would return it....why not, you paid lotsa good money for a product, it should work right.

Joel

I spoke to pictureline today and they said that would replace the camera with no problem and that they were receiving more G2s tomorrow. I also ordered the 1 GB microdrive from them and they honored the "special" price they had for the camera/microdrive combo ($20 off the microdrive). Yet another reason for me to recommend them.

As I still have time to decide I will take my G2 to the speedway on Saturday and load my microdrive up with images of the F1 cars.

I would return it. There is no reason to buy a new G2 and have this discrenpency.
