Looking for 5D Lens advice

I'm a semi-professional photographer/student who will be graduating in the near future, and I'm upgrading from my prosumer Minolta to a 5D system in the next month or so. I was hoping some of you fine people could give me advice on where to start as far as lenses go.

I shoot a good deal of fashion/portrait/event photography, so I'm looking for something that will really capitalize on Canon's great AF capabilities. Should I stick with Canon brand lenses, or is there another alternative?

I'm looking for good value and would rather spend more on a quality lens that will serve me well for years than something just to get by with.

Does anyone have suggestions?

Thanks,

Andrius

If I were getting a 5D and a new lens, I would pick between the new 24-105/4L IS or the 24-70/2.8L.

The 24-105 is perfect walk around range, L quality and build, and image stabilization.

On the otherhand, if you need the speed (possibly for your event photography) than the 24-70 would be the choice. The wide 2.8 aperture would probably give you better focusing in dim light as well.

Good luck choosing!

money must not be that much of a priority.

if i had a FF camera and could have just two lenses:
24-105/4L IS
35/1.4L

if i could add one more:
135/2L

and if i could have two more:
70-200/4L
17-40/4L

those are my reccomendations, in exactly that order.

Sounds like the 70-200/2.8 L IS would be a good lens for fashion/event stuff. Pricey though. The 24-70/2.8 L is a good PJ lens. If I had a 5D, those two are what I'd get.

Plus Sigma 10-20mm for UWA.

I have the 24-105 lens. You cannot go wrong with this lens. Others have reported issues with this lens on the 5D, but I think you'd have to be very picky to notice.

I don't have any pictures on a web site (yet) -- but take a look at the dpreview.com preview of the 5D. The samples were shot with the 24-105 lens.

Very sharp and crisp images every time!

Does anyone have any experience with this lens? I know that it was announced concurrently with the 5D.

I've seen a lot of good feedback for the 24-105/4L IS, but I know the 24-70/2.8L is a good standard lense as well. Besides the lower aperture, are there any other points which might make the 24-70/2.8L more desirable, or is the 24-105/4L IS going to provide the best all-around value?

I've heard that the 24-105/4L IS tends to vignette a bit at 24mm with a full-frame sensor. This will be annoying if I'm shooting jpeg, but not an issue with RAW, which I shoot a lot. Has anyone used the 24-70/2.8L with the 5D? How's the vignetting there?

absolutely NOT. It's not even "ok" on a 1D series body. Sigma clearly states on their website that if this lens is used on anything larger than an APS-C size sensor that vignetteing will occur.

At 10mm on a 1D2 its completely unusable, actually at anything less than 15mm it vignettes noticably.
