Does the D50 stink that much?

Keep an eyeout on Circuit City. I purchased my D70 Kit in August for $1044.95 on their web site. My local CC did not carry the D70 so they placed the order for me, less a CC coupon for 10% off which made the price $940.00. Take away the Nikon $100.00 rebate and I ended up paying $840.00. Same thing 2 weeks ago, I purchased an SB-600 which ended up being $179.00 after a sale and 10% coupon. I generally purchase from B&H but when I can get pricing from CC, I like them because I can always return it to a local store should there be any problems.

I have the D50 and love it. I was considering for a long time whether to get the D70s or the D50. It came down to this:

The D50 took SD cards (which I have a bunch of) and the iso 800 and iso 1600 pictures have lower noise on the D50 than on the D70s when getting jpegs straight from the camera. I know RAW is the best, but I really want jpegs straight out of the camera. The D50 produces vibrant, sharp, low noise, and contrasty jpegs, which are better than the D70s. I realize that post-processing is necessary for all digital photos, but I really try to avoid doing it if I can help it. I mainly just like to go walking out and about with my camera and just shooting things that I randomly see. I'm not entering them in contests or selling them to clients. I just like taking pictures and downloading them to my computer. For this, jepgs are ok. If I do decide to process, I use Photoshop Elements or iPhoto and do very minimal editing. If I really want to get a "framer," then I'll shoot in RAW and do the appropriate workflow.

The D50 was right for me. It's a great camera. I miss the depth of field preview that the D70s has, but that wasn't a deal breaker.

own likes and dislikes and both are great cameras....If I was a more advanced user I would most likely go with the D70-D70s but for the beginner the D50 is a great little camera....You can practice on this and develop your camera skills then step up to a D200 if and when it comes out...That is my plan....If you really think about it we should be hounding over what type of glass we have than the body.....So get some good glass when getting the D50 or D70 body so when upgrading you will already have it there

One thing I do not understand, and please don't take offense if you
are one of them, are the people talking about the flash card. I
don't understand why you would be upset by the SD cards and that
make you not want to buy the camera. I mean you spend hundreds on
the body of your cameras, then hundreds to thousands on lenses, a
few more hundreds on flashes... what is 1 - 200 bucks for a card
that you leave in you camera 99% of the time?
Doesn't make much difference if you don't have any money in cards already, but many folks already have CF cards. The other rub is if you want to upgrade with nikon later, none of their high end cameras currently take SD either. It is possible that they may have a joint CF/SD down the line, but currently, your SD cards would be useless with an upgrade. Not the end of the world, but I'm sitting on about 150 bucks worth of xD cards that I'm not using and it gets me PO'd.

use them for that also...Makes it great when being able to take the cards out of the camera and place in there to see the pics..

I use a 17-55 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8 and both lenses seem to like the d50 better when it comes to focusing. Maybe it is just wishful thinking, but I had to send back my d70 once for this problem and never felt it was completely fixed. The d50 was dead on from the first day.
My understanding is that D70s and D50 does not have the infinity problem with 17-55 because they have a newer AF module. Nikon does claim D70s and D50's AF is faster and more accurate than their predecessors. It all depends on who you trust for information.

Yes, exactly. This is what my point was. BTW for the others out there: there is nothing to get "upset" about. I merely pointed out that there are people who do not want an eclectic collection of CF, SD, MS, MS Pro, MMC ad nauseam.

Have you ever heard of eBay?

Sunhorse, sure, I don't know you from Adam. I was just responding to what you said (below).

To me the only negative factor is the use of the SD card rather than the compact flash. I do not want to have redundant collections of different cards. If you are coming from a P&S, and already have a bunch of SD cards, then your choice may be the opposite of mine.
