I was wondering what size print the Canon EOS D30 is capable of before looking unclassy.

I'd strongly believe it is capable of a standard 4 x 6" print but I'm interested what it is capable of doing.
While I'm asking, what would the Canon EOS 1D be capable of?

Well straight out of the camera it will do 10 x 8" no problem.

Then if you use Genuine Fractals the sky is the limit.

I've gone to 16.5 x 11.5" with no issues at all (A3)

Can you point me to a file from the D30 which I could print at 8"x10" and see how it does?

I've done 24x36 without any trouble at all... The prints look wonderful!

I regularly print 10 x 8, A3 & A3+ full bleed (19 x 13). I've had a few 20 x 30 done, all excellent quality. 4 x 6 is just the start !!

All my prints are accepted by my customers like tradition silver based prints, most seem to prefer digital output.

Depending on what use the print is for up to 8x10's are no problem whatsoever.Using interpolation software larger sizes are possible.

I'd expect the EOS-1D to be able to go about 25% larger which is nice but I was hopeing for 50%.

At what point do the D30 print enlargments breakdown compared to film?

Using a film SLR and the D30: Given the best velvia or other ASA50 speed film and the same glass for both, at what point does the enlargement break down for the d30 wrt the film?

With digital, you have other tools available to you that you don't have in the darkroom. With interpolation you can go bigger and gigger. I have done 20x30 from another 3mp camera and ALSO from a 2.1mp camera. Folks here on the forum easily do 20x30 and I have read where they have gone much larger and gotten stunning results.

I use Qimage and it does the upsizing for me. It is a $35 program designed to handle the printing. I have PS6 but have not tried the upsizing tricks I have learned here yet.

Peter,

you can take any image from the D30, pref shot in RAW mode, and brint out to 10x8.

It looks great.

You end up with a DPI of around 180 at that size, based on simply scaling the original 20x30" 72 dpi image from the D30. No resampling is required.

I think the question should be at what point do 35mm prints break down compared to digital. My experience is that with 35mm negatives 8x10 is fine, 11x14 is ok but a little grainy, and after that you need a very good negative and a lot of work.

With D30 files 8x10 and 11x14 prints are fine, 12x18 is still good, and most likely you can keep on going into sizes where with 35mm you would probably give up.
 
While the 35mm gets grainier with enlargement, the digital gets softer. As you interpolate, you smooth it. Digitally, resolution is not as good as 35mm 50ASA film (small grain* ). But you've basically answered me.

So is there a general consensus that d30 enlargements are generally better than the best 35mm film enlargements?

( Not that I know much, but that the d30 gives equal to better enlargements does surprise me--I would think that you could scan in a high-quality 50asa 35mm negative and get much higher pixel counts. Say 3600dpi scanning at 35mm (1.3inches) gives over 4500 horz pixels, which gives upto a 16mp image. but the question is, does 35mm film really have 3600dpi worth of info in it? The proof is in viewing close-ups of the enlargements...which I haven't done on d30 next to film)

Seriously I think without using interpolation and full 300 DPI on a pro Dye sub it starts to get a little worse for wear after 8x10's but I'm VERY picky.
Its quite usable above this ...

Hi Ajamedor.

I regularly print from images in RAW converted to Tiff or Large Quality mode to JPEG at A4 11.5"x8.5" No problems whatsoever. This is the largest size I have attempted as I only have an EPSON 790 A4 size printer.

I would put some images into this reply but am having problems loading my home page.

Ok I've shot A1 posters at 35mm. With a correct workflow 35mm can go right up up up. not that I'm RECOMMENDING IT mind you ...but it can be done of you have a client with a low budget.

it sounds impressive. What are they? 10 dots per inch?

I have upsized with PS to A3 size and printed on Epson. The results are really nice, my friends couldnt see it was digital. Even if you get closer than you would usually get to an A3 print.
