Aperture - Apple's answer to Photoshop - does not support ProSLR's RAW format

It's a bit of an irony that after years of cursing a variety of third-party website owners, software developers and hardware manufacturers for not supporting my precious Apple computers, I now see that Apple's new Aperture software, which enables a pure RAW workflow and non-destructive editing and which really does look quite exciting, does not support the RAW format of our beloved Kodak DLSRs.

See http://www.apple.com/aperture/

This seems a bit daft since a reasonably large number of portrait and wedding pros use these cameras (yes I do know they've been discontinued...)

In order to fight our corner (not to mention helping the second hand value of our gear) could anyone who cares or has any interest in this register their concern with Apple at

[email protected]

This is the group within Apple which is responsible for RAW format inclusion.

Thanks!

I just sent them an email on this - everyone should do the same.

Are you sure it doesn't support the Kodak, in the main text it mentions the 1DsmkII but then doesn't have it in the list, i don't think the list is as complete as the software. It says it supports the Kodakl probacks.
There is always the dng option.

It's not the answer to Photoshop, as it has a button to click to open the image in your favourite manipulation program, like photoshop is a plug-in. I am going to upgrade my hardware sooner than later to run Aperture providing the tests confirm Apples opinion of the product. It looks fantastic and answers many of my problems.

Kevin.

I've done it, Tim. It doesn't affect me as I can't afford to buy it anyway, but I'd like to pave the way for fellow Kodak users. Also, as a Mac user, iI want to see options kept wide open: we have enough problems with getting Mac versions of some software, wihtout being penalised by the makers of our own OS!
Flick.

Thanks FLick!

You want to try the free covermount CDs that are sure to be on their way soon too! And I've always thought that iPhoto support for DCS RAW would be useful, too: I don't want to 'professionally' process every image I take, and iPhoto is a great quick-fix and cataloguing application.

I'd also love to be able to use the system that allows an iPod to link directly to a camera so as to transfer full flash card contacts to a hard disc when travelling without carrying a computer everywhere. At the moment this isn't possible with DCS RAW either.

Hope all's well with you!

You're welcome :-)

I'm actually happy with file browser in CS. however, I think you're right that iphoto RAW support would be tremendously useful for some people. The OSX list I help moderate often gets messages about this.

Agreed.

I'm well. And you?
Are you going to join us in the challenges again soon?

sending them a email. although it doesnt surprise me that they havent included the slr. as andrea said, dng is an option.

Hi Flick,

All's well with me thanks! I've had a busy summer but as the autumn colours arrive and the weather gets a bit more interesting, I feel my trigger finger getting itchy again! So I should think I'll be blundering into a challenge soon...

Is there any chance that you could seed your OSX forum with the apple email address I gave above, so that people there can join the clamour, or at least help raise it above a whisper ;-) ?

All the Best

Hmm, unless I'm being thick, which is highly likely, using DNG would mean converting all files first before using Aperture? What appeals to me about it is the RAW workflow, rather than having to have at least two large filesize copies of every shot. Please help me if I'm wrong here!

Hi Tim,

Glad yo hear you're okay, and will look forward to future challenge contributions :-)
I'll send that email address and a link for this thread

This is taken from Apple's site concerning what RAW formats are supported.

Developers who wish to have products added to this list should download the Image Capture SDK and send a copy of each successful CameraCheck report to [email protected].

It seems to me that Kodak needs to make info available to Apple.
I have already asked Kodak to do so and am waiting for a reply.

Since Kodak is supporting the slr/n till 2008 (?) They should keep the camera current.

My experience of being on a RAW beta testing program for a major piece of image processing software ;-) is that most of the work gets done by the software manufacturer rather than the camera manufacturer... but no doubt Kodak could be useful here. They may want to bear in mind that the fact that they've dropped to ProSLR range does not give them license to ignore our needs if they are to rely on our goodwill in future!
