Hi,

I narrow it down to these two cam, the s80 is about to come out and there isn't much review about it, but we all know that canon make very good cam.

I really like the pana for the widescreen capability and its size. I know pana offer Raw, but im still kinda newbie and rarely use it, but i dont mind trying it further.

The only thing that worry me about lx-1 is alot of people talking about the graining pics, i guess i rarely take pics above iso100 so it would bother that much.

what do you think, should i go with lx-1 or s80??

I also looked at the LX1. I really like the different aspect ratios and the Leica lens is superior to the S80's. It's just too bad that Panasonic's CCD is so noisy. Take a look at DPReview's gallery; noise is visible in some of the sky shots even at ISO80! I couldn't live with the noise so I'm probably going to buy the S80.

I just received the S80 I ordered. I had seriously considered the LX-1 when it was annnounced, but one big "swinger" for me was the availability of an optical view finder on the S80. Even though both cameras are obviously designed to be used primarily using the LCD, in a bright sunlight situation an optical view finder becomes indispensible (my opinion).

In my very brief experience with the S80, the user interface is clearly very superior to any I have ever experienced --- it makes it relatively very easy to explore & use the many advanced features.

To the OP, there are some minor reviews out on the s80 as it came out last monday... The lens on the lx1 looks superior but like everyone else has stated, there is a lot of noise that I don't see on the s80's shots... That being said, I also think the s80 offers a lot more features that the lx1 does in the manual controls, if you want to go there: the movie mode, although it lacks in the pixel rate the lx1 gives you on their 2.5" lcd... I also think the interface on the s80 looks easier and quicker to use... maybe go to a camera shop and check them both out, the feel of one or the other might tip you one way...

I have had my S80 for a couple of days now and what I realy love is the great image quality and the menu system is very easy to understand.I have taken some shots of my kids and some down by the harbor. The impression of the camera is that it's very solid.you imediate get the feeling of quality. Can somebody tell me how to post pictures here ?

First you have to upload your photos to a photo sharing site such pbase.com, smugmug.com, or flickr.com. Then just include the URL to a photo in your message to post the photo.

Been reading LX1 Versus S80 forums and have decided to go with the Canon S80. I travel a lot, have had a Canon S45 for several years and it has performed very well. Now ready for an upgrade and looking for something with better video clips to avoid lugging two cameras around. I am opting for the S80 because of my past experience with Canon and the slim profile (travel friendly) versus the LX1.

After FZ5 and FZ20, I've lost all my respect for Panasonic. They are bent on squeezing more pixels on their already tiny sensors. I mean visible noise at ISO 80? That's not tolerable. Simon was kind enough to give the LX1 a 'Recommended', I would have given it 'Below Average'. Go for the S80 or S70.
