The news today says that Picasa 2.1 adds raw support for a number of cameras, including Minoltas. I thought Picasa could already read A1 Raw files, but I must have been mistaken. Maybe you could view them but not edit them.

Anyway, has anyone used Picasa for raw formats that it already supported? Does it allow you to "develop" the files? Is it any good at it?

One thing that has always stopped me from using Raw files is the hassle in developing them. Picasa is so nice and easy, maybe this will get me past that.

The only thing I can say is that it still does not support A200 raw format. Pics appear purple. I use rawshooter and it does the job.

I use Picasa 2 for managing my pics, it is a great product but weak for printing out multiple pics and supporting raw format

I just took a RAW plus JPEG test with my A2 of quite a contrast interior including a window and Picasa2 opened both instantly and the difference clearly favoured the RAW.

As I do most of my initial processing in Picasa2 this is great news and will make RAW a realistic workflow for me.

Thanks for pointing out the change...Picasa had automatically updated but I hadn't realised the implications.

It seems that they haven't done anything on sharpening, which was very often suggestion for improvement... or am i mistaken? Anybody knows?
Othervise I'm very happy with it.

nope. Nothing on sharpening. It's the same one button sharpen, that's a little too agressive and with an apparent threshold of '0' levels, brings out the noise in our high noise digicams.

The previous version worked with the RAW files from my A2. So there is nothing new there. But if the improvements regarding external harddrives is true that is just wonderful news. I am just trying out the new version right now... So we will see. It sure is a wonderful little program!

It looks like my version was not updated yesterday but is now. A200 Raw is fully supported, this is great. The tuning features are still better with Rawshooter but this is a step forward.

Serge - my photos were purple also, after the update, but all I had to do was restart Picasa and all was well again. Seems OK so far, but I'm new to Picasa so I'm still finding my way around.

Does anyone here know if Picasa process raw files in 16 bit? Isn't that the best way to take advantage of Raw?

I'll try shooting my next digital roll in Raw and see how I like the workflow. Thanks everyone for takiing a look for me.

It did not work after the update but worked fine yesterday when I opened it again. It is full of nice features for managing pics, I am sure you'll like it. I use it most of the time, except for raws and printing out multiple pics on one page - I prefer the Canon easy print tool box for this.
