Hi all,

There is more information from a local website in Tai Wan: URL see below. It mentioned that the 1D will use highest class 4.5 mega-pixel (effective 4.16MP) CCD (yes, not CMOS) ordered from Sony. Canon has compared the prototype with D1X and found that the 1D prototype has better picture quality. The original announce date was Sept but postponed to October due to technical problem found in prototypes.

Though you don't understand the Chinese characters, you may still take a good guess of what the website has mentioned, especially the specification.

We'll all need to judge whether the information is accurate.

I wonder why they went with the CCD instead of continue to develop the CMOS....do they know somethign that we dont?

According to the website's "exclusive news" and believe it or not: Canon was intended to use CMOS as in the D30 but they have encountered delay in project and also suffered from huge pressure for the release of a flagship DC. Thus they've changed their plan and use CCD instead.

Ah, I thought that was the case. If the camera was near launch more would have been spotted being field-tested, so my guess is they found some major flaw and withrew the lot.

I suspect that its proved too difficult (at the moment) to make a higher res CMOS sensors with no flaws.

All these news about Canon ditching CMOS in favour of CCD are just baseless rumours, obviously almost everyone has been conned by Chasseur de Images for having wrote that, of which the rumour is also picked up by that independent EOS French site, which in turn has its content translated into Chinese by the said Taiwanese site. All these nonsenses from some people who have yet to see or handle the new pro camera ...???

I have just gotten the D30, and from what I see it compared to ( of 4mp ccd-based systems), I think I would still prefer the D30 to a 4.5MP ccd based one...

Now we might see that they have done great things with that CCD but...

And I will then rather wait for the next gen CMOS chips...
I wonder why they went with the CCD instead of continue to develop
the CMOS....do they know somethign that we dont?
Nothing says that they abandoned CMOS development...

Nope, it has always been scheduled for an October launch worldwide. And a lot of professionals have been discreetly testing the camera since late June and there's no major flaw detected whatsoever.

I agree with you Kai. It would seem that a lot of folks have picked up the info from the french site, and then through translation and retranslation into various languages it comes out sounding rather authoritative, and sufficiently different from the original to belie its origins. It may well be the french site is correct in its predictions but recent discussion in this Taiwanese and other sites could well be just a multinational echo. Let's just wait for Canon to do the talking. That would appear to be coming within the next two weeks or so.

Which CCD? Sensor size is a very imprtant consideration. E.g. if you are comparing to an Olympus E10 or a Canon G2, forget it...

I too am much more interested in the results than in the semmiconductor processes used in making the camera...

It is probably pretty difficult to tell if a sensor is a CCD or CMOS by just looking at it or even by looking at the output images. Thus making such rumors even more suspect...

Hi Louis,

I also read that Taiwanese article. It NEVER said that "1D prototype has better picture quality". It only said that "Compare with D1x, Canon has adjusted the Color Reproduction and Contrast of 1V/1D to a satisfactory level. It also said that price may be $7000+USD. Are we reading the same article? Or may be my Chinese is rusty?

I guess we're reading different articles then. In the one I've mentioned, it never talks about price in USD but instead NT Dollars. And it did mentioned that the picture quality is better than the D1X. Please try to locate the article from the upper left corner of the main page.

That is what I got from the article you mention.
