This little bird was making the most beautiful song in my backyard. It stayed only long enough for me to run into the house, grab the fz30, and click off one shot of it. Didn't even have a chance to check where the settings were at on the camera. Can you help me id it?
Here is the original shot, 8mp

Here is a crop with a bit of contrast adjustment and unsharp mask.

Sorry LaRee, I cann´t help with the id, but the pic is beautiful, the crop is perfect. I´ve tried to take fotos of small birds with no success. They move so fast and there is no time to focus before they change the place. But trying it is fun!

I think you are right John. That is the conclusion I came to after reading the Sibley guide. It was a real wee little bird. Thanks for your help!

Looks similar to finches around here (SoCal).
Thanks Sheri. With your help I looked under finches in the Sibley guide and I do believe it is a lesser goldfinch. Thank you for taking time to post.

Looks like a goldfinch to me ... great capture, these are good
enough for a bird book!
I feel pretty lucky to have got one shot of this wee little (what I now know to be a) lesser goldfinch. After the shot I realized I had my camera set to macro focus. oops. Oh well, still managed to take the wee little guys photo before he flew off. :-)

This was a really lucky catch as the bird flew away right after the first shot. I agree with John that it is a lesser goldfinch, from looking at the Sibley's guide.

Didn't come out too bad considering I didn't check my settings. It was taken with the macro focus on! Ah well, didn't seem to come out too bad in any case.
Thanks again for looking and posting.
