I often use focal lenghts around 18-22 mm, in low light situations. I have the EF-S 10-22 mm and it is an excellent performer when there is enough light.

What I would want is something close to the reputed performance of the 35/1.4L, for a 1.6 crop factor. From a technical point of view, it would make sense with an EF-S 20 mm with maximum aperture of 1.4 or 1.8.

Is there so little demand for this that Canon will never make it? I've been reading this forum for a while, and not seen others wishing the same.

28 or 30 mm isn't wide enough. 24/1.4 L and Sigma 20/1.8 have shortcomings that make it hard to pay the price, as they are made for full frame. My only resort would be Sigma 18-50 2.8, which again isn't fast enough.

If there are any others, have you given up hoping?

What are the short commings with the sigma 20mm? Think of full frame as a bonus, who knows, you may go full frame someday. Im happy with my sigma 20 =)

I'm sure the Sigma 20/1.8 is a good lens, and it's nice to hear you're happy with it ;)

The shortcomings I was thinking of, are maximum aperture of 1.8 ( would ultimately want 1.4), clutch MF/AF mechanism, and it's bigger and heavier

than it would need to be in an EF-S (DC by Sigma) variant. Besides it's not commonly avaliable in my area, wich makes me think I will have to pay extra to get it.

If I move to full frame, 20 mm would not be a frequently used focal length to me, and it would probably never be used anyway. This is different with the 35/1.4 L wich is a very useful focal length on both formats.

If it gives good enough results I don't care what the size of the image circle is. A smaller image circle makes some lenses easier to design but is not inherently superior. I don't think it would do a thing for very fast very wide lenses, which are very hard to design with any size image circle... that is why you don't see that combo very often.

Because it is virtually impossible to build a FF 20/1.4 with L performance. Canon has made a very good wide angle zoom that takes advantage of the frame size, I also want them to make a wide angle prime that does the same.
