I have this tough duty of going to a convention in Vagas this week and I was wondering if any of you could give me any tips on good places to shhot with my 20D. (Of course I'll take it to the strip and downtown). What I am looking for is scenic places. Any help will be appreciated.

I've found some really nice prespective off some of the overpasses at night. I also like shooting from the south end looking north, you can get a lot of casinos in one picture. Just my .02

Are you serious? I'm the webmaster of

http://www.procabbie.com Call me any day from Fri~Tues at 702.308.0086 for a charter, between 6am and 1pm. Check my little strip galleries, linked from: http://procabbie.proboards31.com in the Photography thread. We can bring my 20D kit, and you can try what you don't have. Just keep the meter running!

In town, the big non-postcard subject right now is new construction. MGM/Mirage has begun construction of the most ambitious project in human history, near Bellagio, with an initial budget of $4.5B (CapitAl "B"). 90 new condo towers have been approved for construction here, with only about the first dozen in different phases of construction. Venetian is building the Palazzo: http://www.procabbie.com/Palazzo/Palazzo.html which is a bit further along than this set indicates. The Frontier is set for implosion on Nov. 17 or 19, making room for Trump. Excavation has begun for the first Trump effort, adjacent to the Fashion Show Mall.

Everywhere, within the perimeter of hills that encircle the Las Vegas Valley, there is overwhelming evidence of new home construction that makes this the fastest growing metropolitan area in the free world for the 11th. consecutive year. From Southern Highlands, over Hualapai to the developments in North Las Vegas, near the Moapa Indian Reservation (A single development that involves 50,000 new homes), the sheer prevalence of heavy equipment is just intimidating.

Outside of Vegas, there is the Red Rock Canyon Scenic loop, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, and Mt. Charleston and the Lee Canyon Ski resort. Take your pick. The Las Vegas Valley is the most vibrant, charged-up, exuberant and happening place in the history of humankind, right now.

Sure seem to know your way around. Where would you think the best place is to buy Blue Man tickets? good seats, good price?

Keep in mind that Death Valley national park is only 125 miles door to door from Vegas and Zion is about 165 miles. I went to Zion last Sunday and the colors were just starting to come out at higher elevations. Should be great in two weeks. They get reds as well as yellows up there. In all due defference to Yosemite, Zion is one of the greatest scenic parks in the country.

Most folks don't realize that while Vegas is at 2000 ft elevation, the trail head on Mt Charleston starts at 7000 ft. It's only 40 miles to get up there and its like a whole 'nother world that most tourists don't even consider. The trees are cedars and aspens so the color is mostly yellow once the changes start.

The mountains west of town are called the Spring Mountains because of all the water that flows from them. There are waterfalls and a lake out there.

If you have it, bring a wide angle lens. Also, shooting raw is a blessing when you get back to your computer.

Vegas is an incredible photo op for the strip, for its women, and the natural beauty as well.

Thursday nights at Studio 54 is body painting night and you won't believe the shots you can take without having to pay model fees. The girls are, for the most part, show dancers and you get to shoot them up close. Bring a good falsh unit.

Red Rock Canyon out of town is incredible. It's Vegas, so you never know when your scenic shoot will turn into something else...

And of course Hoover Dam... but you're hard pressed to not take snap shots there, it's so touristy...

and if all else fails... just go shopping

Good luck Brad, you will have a blast in Sin City...

If you are wanting a great shot well over and above the usual Vegas shot try a few from atop this 106 floor vantage point. We had our sons wedding night dinner there and afterwards went out on the balcony if thats what it is called. The viiew as the sun started to set was pretty nice indeed. From there you can see quite clearly just how wide spread Vegas is.

There are photos to be shot from all over in Vegas so I am sure you will find a treasureload. I look forward to you sharing them with us when you return.

Thanks to you all for what you share so freely, It's my hope to be able to help others as well.

The stratosphere has a real nice vantage point of the whole area. Shooting at twylight when the lights come to life along the strip can be good. You can't bring a tripod up there though.

The whole strip area at night is great too.

Have fun!

I love that first one. Maybe I should have done some of the lights. Next time. I guess this trip was my desert trip.

Thanks stklaw! The first one was 24-70L-- that lens just deliver. Second one, I was 'playing' with my new EF-S 10-22. The weather has been great so far. Good time of year to be here. Happy shooting!
