Can someone tell me how this was done

Oh, did not know the Nikon's advantage here. Oh well, the Canons win somewhere esle I'm sure !
I use rear curtain indeed.
I prefocus and cross my fingers :-)

hey ralph - awesome stuff and consistently good :D

the slowsync in itself is a bit harder with the canons - you have
to be on rear curtain right? otherwise all trails will lead the
wrong way, the 20d for instance cannot do 100% pure rear curtain
also the flash handling of nikons is still better for this kind of
work, so is perhaps the color rendition - i like nikon... why do i
have a canon?

do you use prefocus or AF?

am I to understand that my 20D and 580ex flash is not capable of this sort of photography? :(

Sounds fishy....

Barney-

I've been doing nightclub photography for 5 years, and I don't know why you would want to use rear curtain synch. I want the flash to capture the moment when I hit the shutter, that's the key action. The long shutter after that is just atmosphere. If your trying to capture a half or a full second of action afterwards-your just guessing quite randomly.

On something like a car, where there is clear direction of movement, I understand the purpose of rear curtain-in a nightclub I don't get it.

Also, where do you get you info that the 20D can't do "true" rear curtain?

Rear curtain can produce interesting effects. I've tried several times and this are my best attempts
I like it....

Hmm...

From what I'm seeing. I think I might know why you're choosing 'Rear Curtain' flash..

is it because that way, when the flash finally goes off, the image it captures will override the majority of the motion blurs, as opposed to the flash shooting off first, then all the motion blurs will be 'on top' of the flash lit image?

Also, since you're shooting people, they usually have a tendency to stay still until 'after' the flash goes off, especially if they're sort of just posing anyways, yes?

I too am of the mind that I intuitively prefer to have the flash capture the moment the instant I hit the shutter button, but if we're going for these type of visuals, then rear curtain is the way to go (?).

Anyone have any update on why Canon can't do something of this nature ("pure" rear curtain)?

This is not a problem with careful composition. The main subject exposure will only get "overwritten" by a large bright light source.

The only difference is that Canon don't use the word "rear curtain" but the "second curtain sync". All the rest is the same.

With normal flash, the flash fires when the shutter curtains are fully open. This is called first curtain sync. Since there is no time lag, it makes it easier to capture the decisive moment.

By selecting the second curtain sync mode either on the EOS camera or on the EX Speedlite (availability varies from model to model), the flash fires right before the shutter curtain closes.

I found the second curtain sync useless for paty photography. Why? Because I don't like people are posing. They look quite unnatural this way. I like them to capture in the middle of their moving. I would get several trash photos when using "second curtain sync" or "rear curtain" this way because after 2 second exposure when my flash would fire object would fall out of my viewfinder and the photo would be empty. Using the first curtain sync is the only way on parties using long exposure times.

It's a good start on how the Canon flash work. But you need a lot of practice after that to get some decent party photos.

And this is how the first, second and high speed sync work with Canon:
