Thanks to those posting G2 samples!
Does anyone have some nice portraits to post? You know, normal head-shots?

I'd like to see some samples showing depth of field, colours, sharpness, detail,...

Thanks!

The G2 won't give shallow depth of field for portraits. No camera in this category can do that because they have such short lenses.

I've been talking about Sony 707 a lot recently. You can reduce the depth of field when you zoom. With 5x optical zoom you'll get an excellent portrait. (look at Phil's wife photo in 707 gallery)

Hope I did OK... these were from this afternoon, just posted on the web. Most of these were taken at the camera defaults in P-mode, with forced fill-in flash (thus, the slight bluish tinge to them). I should've messed with white balance, but didn't have time.

Thanks.

Longer zooms help, but even those camera's give more depth of field than an equivalent 35mm SLR simply because the CCD is smaller. Check out the Canon D30, for example, that uses a much larger CMOS sensor - depth of field is much smaller - hence, the photos look more film-like and it's easier to blur the background for portraits.

Good quality pics (excellent colours and exposure). Was that all due to the G2? ;-) Skin tones look natural (I saw some review pics where the skin tones had a magenta cast over at imaging-resource site...I think). Nice work.

The pics are lovely and clear - good colours and skin tones. Probably not enough depth of field blur on the portrait shots though. Looking at the EXIF data, seems that better results (in terms of background blur) could be achieved by using full telephoto and f2.5.

Cheers

Do you use a UV filter on the G2? If yes, which one? Going to get one myself.

Hola Toremadrid,

I think if you get the G2 and the 1.5X converter or an after-market
2X converter, you should have no problem getting that shallow depth-
of-field that you require for your portraits.

Cameras & Cocktails....................(San Miquel beer in Puerto Banus,
of course)

I uploaded two pictures (with and without Tiffen teleconverter) to compare dof. I was only 2 feet 8 inches away from the subject, so that changes the dof from a normal portrait, but hopefully it will show the difference.

Bill,

I think you have shown our friend in Madrid what I saying and,
hopefully, what he wanted to see.

Cameras & Cocktails......(with a Pepsi mixer, of course)

Yeah, Yeah, so he's not from Madrid, he might have been.

far too many)

Yes, I keep meaning to try the "portrait mode" on the camera in these situations, but I keep forgetting to switch out of P.

I have one, yes, but I haven't used it. In fact, I haven't even put the LensMate on my new camera yet. Wish the thing was chrome instead of black... gonna look weird on my G2.

Did you use the UV filter with the G1? If yes, what brand was the UV filter......Hoya, Tiffen? Thanks.

If you use a converter you have to stand back further to get the same shot. The Pepsi cans were shot from 2'8". That is awfully in your face for a portrait. And most people I know have heads bigger than a Pepsi can.

There's nothing you can do to get around the fact that a really short lens is not suitable for shallow DOF with portraits.

I should say there's nothing you can do on the camera side. You can blur the background in software.

Hi Bryan,

You may want to contact Susan Doel at LensMate. I think you'll be pleasently surprised...

G1 users, like myself, will have new options as well. (I think I'll let her explain). "Get a grip!" :)
