Having recently opted to buy the dsc f828 I find that this has been discontinued in the UK. I like the new R1, but am dissapointed with zoom range, 28-200 is most practical. Cost of tele converter makes this camera too expensive when compared to dslr like KM D5 with 28-200 lens. I may try and find a dsc828 in stock somewhere. Otherwise its an Olympus 8080 with tele con.

there are still many F828 in the market, I amusing one and got a tele conversion lens with 2.2x that give me over 500mm
Go to Raynox site look for the DCR-2020 PRO for H1 and F828.

One thing that I noted I've taken a lot of test shots recently comparing my F828 at 7x zoom and 5x zoom (R1 equiv) and the difference really doesn't seem like to much of a problem, sure I would have loved 10x+ but the actual difference between 7 and 5 doesn't seem top bad. Any the extra quality will go along way :-)

Sony should definitely have made at least a 6x zoom , preferrably 8x zoom. I want you to know if you picked up a camera much cheaper ( that will remain nameless) you can get great shots as good as the f828 almost. I just don't know why it takes so long to get what people want.5x zoom simply is not worth 1000 dollars in my eyes. sorry

Just don't look back. I'd pick a 24 - 120 mm range anyday over 28 - 200. Sony is giving us a comparitively higher quality lens that may not seem more versatile at first - but it is. Just looking at raw numbers is an illusion. When you spend just a bit of time to understand the 24 - 120 lens and come back with your shots from the R1 - you just won't look back.

This is pretty funny considering all the people complaining Sony should make a camera with a larger sensor. They did and to keep the lens size reasonable they had to decrease the range. If they kept a 7X lens it would be too large and if they kept a 7X F2.0 lens it would be much larger.

Sony listened to their users and this forum and delivered what was asked for.

Unfortunately the R1 won't be available until late November at the earliest.

However I can say that the 828 is an excellent camera and the H1 is a well worth a look.

If you can still get an 828 I would heartily recommend it to you. Check out my web site below for examples of what it can do.

That means they don't study the market well. Period. And they recently admitted it.

Hello:

I completely agree...Sony has made a camera with a nice 1.6 sensor and a high quality 5:1 ratio lens...Any higher with current lens technology and the lens quality would suffer or the expense/size would be prohibitive...A 5:1 ratio is really pushing the envelope to maintain high quality glass standards to fill a larger sensor...This lenses overall quality will undoubtedly surpass anything Sony has put on the market...To cheapen that by making it a super zoom is ludicrous...You want a super zoom, buy a H1...You want a super zoom with the quality of the R1, buy a SLR with a few lenses...Sony knows exactly what it's doing and what a very large degree of consumers want...Larger pixels from a larger sensor and a very high quality fixed lens for under a grand...

APS-C sensor is a break thru. We agree. But 28-200 is the favorite range of many photographers. This is the fact. And this range is especially important to a prosumer of which the lens cannot be changed. That is why people complain about the new R1's range is too short. We know that the reason behind is Sony wants to maintain the quality of the image produced. We also know that the R1 would be even more bulky (it is already very bulky now) if putting a 7X f2.0 spec into it. So what. People will still complain the inadequate of focal length. In fact, the R1 is quite difficult to satisfy many groups of people, some want a reasonably longer range (such as 28-200 which is the same as the 828), and other want a smaller body. To me, it's too bulky. I want a smaller body.

thank you so much

I am lucky to be surrounded by amazingly beautiful countryside and beaches everywhere . And all on my doorstep literally.

What else could a man do but take up photography and show the world how beautiful NZ is

Cheers
