I'm camera shopping, right now comparing the Canon G2 to the Nikon 995--I'm getting the idea that the Nikon does not do well in low light situations--especially the sunrise, sunset photos I want to take---would appreciate any info on this. Thank you!!!!

Hi Alex,

The 995 doesn't focus well in low-light situations because it doesn't have a focus-assist lamp. In exposing low/difficult lighting situations like sunrises and sunsets, however, the Nikon matrix metering is tops. I have no idea how well the G2's new evaluative metering works compared to Nikon's 256-division matrix metering though. You might want to ask the people on the Canon forum about how their new G2's are treating them before you decide.

Thank you---I am a novice just moving up from a basic camera, so here's my novice question--does the use of the matrix metering make for good quality sunrise/sunset pics? thank you

Hi, Alex: One nite, I drove up to the front entrance of a 7-eleven store, while the engine was still on, I took a snap at the store with ISO 400 through the windshield of my car, and the result? here it is

P/s: I never washed my car for the last 5 years !!!

Hi Alex,

Sometimes I have problems with my 995 auto focus in low light situations (at indoors with regular incandescent lights too), but I never had problems with sunrises/sunsets (sometimes you must to lock the focus at infinite pressing one button).

Greetings

Fernando

I think the problem you refer to is mainly to do with indoor shots where the AF light seems to indicate AF not locked on. However I have taken shots in this situation and the shots, so far, seem to come out well. Maybe there was more of a problem with older models, maybe there is still a slight weakness in the 995. A great model all the same.

I find the matrix metering is very good or very bad. Spot metering or a separate light meter and evaluating the circumstance is best. My guess is the 256 part is the marketing department giving a better name to 8 bits of information - renaming a hammer to something like el slammo.....

All of the digicams I've owned and used - this includes original Apple QuickTake through professional Kodak backed cameras - don't compare to film in low light.

I was a member of the gang who didn't know if I should buy or wait, but got the 995 because of the manual control it offers, great macro performace, lots of accessories and figuring out that there's not much difference in low light performance when you calculate the main competition has about 1 f stop difference.

I also thought the twist body would be more rugged than flip out LCD.

You might laught at this in terms of low light. My ancient Weston light meter broke, so I'm using my 995 for as the light meter for a 1950 vintage manual camera for own and love. Go get a nice 50 year old camera for $50 and you have your low light performer and your 995 or G2 can be the light meter.

the 995 has to be this good or better... blue chemlight, straight from camera
