hi,

I am considering buying a new LCD monitor (maybe a Lacie) for my old computer or a new laptop.

Since I live in a rather small apartment and I am also travelling frequently it would be more convenient for me to buy a laptop. So I would like to check what's the state of the art in graphics for laptops.

Do you know if is there any PC laptop (not Apple) that would have a suitable screen+graphics card set for doing decent color correction in PS ?

thanks,
marc

HP has a new one that is designated as a media center. Can't remember the model of it. My nephew has one, and he loves the thing. Expensive, but he says it is worth it. 17" screen too, and it might weigh too much for a traveler. gc

ok, thanks for the info, I'll dig in the internet to find it.

But I would like to have the opinion of somebody who has actually used it. I am working with completely unsuitable equipment and all the pictures I create with my computer look nasty in a decent screen and I wouldn't like to find myself in the same situation again...

Does anybody have some experience with the sony VAIO screens ?

thanks again,
marc

Don't forgeet to budget for a color calibration system. Even identical machines have large color differences out of the box.

Some color calibrations systems are CRT-only, so check that before you buy one.

I think most laptops will suffer a tradeoff between monitor quality and the concern for battery life. Never heard of any that are recommended for graphic work.

I see some recommend a DELL - check it and compare by eyesight first if you can. I have a Latitude D600 and after a while I found it was NOT fit. The colors are too desaturated - nothing to do with it and it makes it's very hard to see when you saturate too much - or too little for that matter. I use an extra monitor with it now, a Samsung 193P. Not PRO stuff but better than most consumer monitors in that priceclass. Tricky to calibre though but it can be done.

I just got a Toshiba 17" laptop and find the colors quite compatible to our Sony 19" LCD/TV monitor. It is a little heavier than my old 15" but I think the quality and size of the monitor make up for the extra weight. I am very happy with it, I only use it to play in PS in our 5th wheel and I'm very satisfied with graphics of it.

I read a review in a digital photo mag at a grocery while killing time for a pick up last week.

I'll be checking these folks out when I need a new machine.
