D1 & D1h

I have three non Nikon batteries and three Nikon batteries and to tell you the truth the Nikons suck. The three non Nikon batteries last me twice as long and they are usually cheaper. Even then when I do an all-day shoot I go through at least two non Nikon batts. That’s why when I'm all out of power with the D1h I got a weeks worth of D70 batts so I can keep on shooting for those long assignments.
 
Is your battery new? How about the contacts on the battery?

I find it very hard to think that camera can only shoot for 100 frames and it's dead..

While i'm not dobuting you, sounds more like a battey issue.

It's that bad?

How can Phill say he got over 1,000 shots from the camera?

Hi Mike..do yourself a favor and either buy another D70/s or wait for the D200. The D1 series eats batteries. 300 or less shots per charge on a new battery is all you can expect. What's worse is reaching for the D1H when you'd like to get a quick shot only to find a dead battery. You'll be glad you have the D70. Add to that the extra weight, no iTTL and limited cropping. It's yesterday's tech. Yes you can get great pics but so will the D70. Remember Nikon does not transfer warranties (D1H is too old for warranty anyway). One trip to Nikon for something serious and you'll have the cost of a D70 just for the repair. Just my honest opinion.
 
I'm just trying to figure out how Phill got 1,000 pictures from the D1 and D1h.

I'm just puzzled, as for the age of the camera I don't just buy stuff and when something new comes out, just dump my stuff.

Heck I'm still use my Sony DCR-TRV310 from 1998, yes it's old but it still amazes me.

but 300 shots from a charge something sounds screwy.. I might email Phil or email Nikon.

I've had (as I'm sure plenty here have had) all the D1 series cameras. All got 300 or less shots per charge even with after market batteries. It's not reasonable to think you won't chimp, not use VR or manual focus just to pull a few more pics. Some thing like believing the MPG figures on a new car sticker....who always drive down hill?
 
I will have to get around to asking Phill.. and from what I understand Nikon's brand was not cheap.. How much was the non Nikon brand?

No it's not screwy, no need to call or email Phil or Nikon.

The newer batteries are much more powerful. It's been documented enough... 300 shots per charge. Take it or leave it...
 
Did you get them from B&H? I can't seem to find another other then Nikon at the website.

I got my various non Nikon batts from B&H and the local camera store that got them in by accident.
 
I love my d1h, except the multi selector button just fell off (anybody know a solution?) black tape is working for now. Anyway, high iso is great, my favorite subjects are whitetail deer and other native wildlife, and greatest majority of opportunities are really early morning or late evening - high iso is a must if you are going to get pics. I go clear up to 6400 on my d1h, yep, there is some noise, but getting the picture of that big buck is my aim and many times it is that or no pic. I have d70 also, but use the d1h more now that I have it. As far as batteries go, I have 1 nikon and 1 powermart ($29.95) and don't have any problem at all with number of pics from a battery. I have in fact gotten 1000 pics on a fresh charge several times. I hardly ever use the lcd though, preview is always off. The only problem I see with the batteries is that they are nicad and they self discharge over time. If you charge one and let it set a month or just take a few pics, you will not get many pics per charge at all. This is sometimes frustrating, and I have been forced into taking the d70 several times when I went out on the spur of the moment and had not recently charged the d1h battery and found it almost gone. I am a strong fan of refreshing the d1h batteries about every 3rd charge also.

so 6400 is useable in the right type of lighting right?

I'd be curious how it would fare in a day of shooting in NYC or D.C I for the most part would try and buy new battery pack, I can see how the preivew would eat the power.

Nikon I think themselfs say to refresh the battery after 4 times, does it auto discharge it, then tops it off?

The only place I use 6400 is in really bad light. Took several shots the other evening this way. Most here would probably throw the resulting images in the recycle bin, but for what I am after, sometimes any shot is way better than no shot at all. When you are at 1/30 to 1/60 sec wide open with your tele at 6400 there is not much other way to get there. Sometimes light is bad enough that it's 1/30 wide open with 85mm 1.8 6400 iso. I actually have shots that I consider usable under these conditions. I do use 800-1600 iso almost as a normal setting in daylight with my sigma 50-500 on the d1h and have never had objectionable noise in prints.

On the battery refresh, the nikon charger has a button for refresh that runs it completely down and then recharges, takes overnight to do this though, so you have to plan ahead. Occasionally when I want a quick charge, I will just start firing away at nothing with the camera to get the battery as low as I can before a regular recharge. I am sometimes amazed at the old (I believe I said nicad before) nimhd in that it will not only self discharge, but will self revive a bit also, I have many times went till the camera wouldn't work, shut it off for several minutes and get quite a few more pics after starting back up.
