I don't think you are stupid.
You can't mount add-on lenses directly, you need a special adapter,
like the one I use from Dave B (see http://www.actplus.net/dwh593/ )
I just received by Canon TC-58 an it works great. Olympus has the
Tcon 14 B, but that was almost twice the price.

A few months later.....
I still have the lens and adapter, but hardly use it. Guess it too
much work, it looks bad and it limits the zoom range to 120-150 mm.

so no range at all, only at 600? Well at least a great tele

If you're in the UK, talk to SRB in Luton, Bedfordshire... they
tailor made an adaptor for me a while back that I use with filters
and telephoto lenses up to the magnificanet EagleEye 5x with few
problems. Does result in some loss of flexibility of the zoom range
of the camera or you get some vignetting but generally I'm very
happy with it.
