G'Day from downunder, first post in this forum. My problem is noise, mechanical noise from the 20D, it frightens birds up close 2- 3 meters distance. I am after a quiet camera to replace my Panasonic FZ10 (totally silent) for close up of birds. Just How noisy is the Rebel, anyone using it under similar conditions to what I plan to use it for? The price is right at the moment in Aus, and its compatible with my 20D gear.
Sample pic of the type I plan to use it for below.

I have never used it under those circumstances but the XT is still fairly noisy... better check it out in person if you can before purchasing it.

Thanks Jim, Yes that 20D is one noisy beast, luckily I can use it for sports. My FZ10 is silent and enables me keep snapping until the subject adopts a good posture, - I shoot from several custom built bird hides to document the birds on my 5 acre block which is dedicated to wildlife. I could pull back to 4 meters distance and use say a 400f5.6L, still a big risk if the camera is still too noisy from that distance.

I tried a Nikon d50 at a local BestBuy a while ago, and it's a lot more quiet than XT or 20d. Actually I think the noise in XT/20d is a simulated film-winding noise, not something mechanical (I could be wrong). I wish this could be turned off.

The Nikon I tried only made the mirror flipping sound, which is very soft.

I like to photograph my dog and cats and birds and squirrels outside.

The shutter sound/mirror slap from the 20D is extremely noisy and has ruined many a photo op for me. The XT is much quieter, but it will still startle birds and they fly off.

I suppose it wouldn't be a problem with an extremely long lens, but it still is a consideration.

Too bad the non-dslrs aren't as fast or offer such long lens as the dslrs do.

The 20D and XT are both quite noisy. The XT has a more whiney/squeaky mechanical noise, and the 20D is just a loud slap. If you're really into nature photography, you would do well to find a 10D in good condition. It has one of the quietest shutters known. It's great for weddings and such.

Oh god no! There is no simulated noise. It's just the shutter and mirror...unless you're one of those militant Sony EVF types who still think that having those is "simulating" and film cam. :-D

Well like I said, I wasn't sure, but if it wasn't simulated noise, I don't understand why the Nikon sounds much softer and doesn't have the shrieking noise, if you know what I mean.

I actually like the Rebel XT noise, but sometimes I wish it could be turned off.

Try the Nikon, you'll see what I mean.

noise of the 20D. I thought I saw a thread somewhere saying the 10D
was the quietest but do not know much about that model.
Yes, the 10D is extremely quiet. Just a soft "cluck".

But it has many downsides for birding, from noisy 1600 iso to B-side AF to lower resolution to very slow writing/reviewing. :(
