Hello,

Okay, I am hoping to find some guidance. I am planning a vacation for about 8 days and I have a Canon 20d and two 2GB CF cards. What I am shopping for now is some sort of a portable hard drive that I can put in to my large camera bag. I am still not sure if I want or need a LCD screen yet. What is your recommendations?

Thanks,

I agree to go ask this on the storage and media forum.

I own a Flashtrax (20GB) http://www.smartdisk.com . I have had it for a year and a half. It works very well for me. It is very portable and the LCD screen is nice.

Another alternative is a portable standalone CD burner. It is cheaper but you cannot view the images.

That's easy, Adeptjr: get an iPod ( http://www.apple.com/ipod/color/ ) with Camera Connector. It'll give you the portable photo storage you need, plus a photo/video viewer, plus an mp3-player, plus a portable harddisk. All in one go.
And not just for those 8 days of your vacation!

Have fun,
RS

This all sounds so good. I came across a unit where you put in a Laptop 2.5 hard drive yourself. This system is the Digimate II. So for under $150 going through eBay I can get the system and a hard drive. Has anybody played with this unit yet?

I am kind of leaning towards the idea of a PSD with a LCD screen, but hoping for something not so pricey. A laptop is good, but is also a bulky item to be carring along. I just want something to keep in the camera bag.

Thanks,

I have a DigiMate II plus that I got from mwave.com. It came with the hd installed (30 gb). It seems well built and works great for pulling the shots off the cards. I had a little trouble getting stuff back off the unit onto my computer, but I attribute that to my computer and not necessarily the unit.

As others have suggested, check out the storage forum here for tons of very helpful info.

I had a similar situation in July (trip to MauI). I settled on a GMini by ARCOS. It has a twenty gig harddrive, uses a USB 2 interface to the computer, will accept a CF card right out of the camera, has good zoom capability on the viewing screen, comes with cable to direct connect to a TV, is reasonably priced, and will fit in a shirt pocket.

Further, it has mp3 music, mpg1 viewing capability and can run games (propritary format). You can also upload any file on your computer, to the unit, though they can't be opened. But, if you need to move files from one computer to another it's got any of the protable memory sticks beat.

Guess it's not to hard to tell this has worked very well for me.

You can select the size of HD you need - self install also! Buy unit without HD and then buy as many as you need to install yourself. Also has built in card reader. I will buy this myself before my next big holiday next year.

Are there any out there where I can install my own hard drive and it has at least a 3" LCD view screen so I may view the pictures?

The VX-6210 has a 2 inch LCD colour screen but you can view RAW files on it. Firmware will provide for the more common types of RAW formats (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Fuji and Oly (E-1)).
