Question for anyone that knows..........i just got my 580 EX in today and i am going to use it next week to take some shots at another football game. i have shot football games before but not with a big flash like this. what settings should i use with the flash. i have an idea i just want to know what you all have done or hear what you would do.....i have a 20d and the 580ex with a 70-300 mm4.5 lens. (i know thats not the best lense so you dont have to say anything about that) trust me i want a 2.8 lense but this will have to do for now. just let me know the best settings for the equipmenst i have. thank you.....and heres a link to some football pics i took without the flash

You will have to use one shot camera mode since that lens is slow to focus. At least that's how I found it.

I'd set the camera to manual mode, aperture wide open, and speed at 1/250th minimum. ISO 800 -1600. The flash will recycle faster at a wide aperture; it will also blur the background for you somewhat.

Canon 2oD, Canon Gee3, and Canon S7o.

I keep trying to find an artist's eye in the B & H catalog

As a newbie to the 580EX and still learning - if you set the Tv above 1/250 I think you will need to set the flash high speed sync.

If you set a shutter speed that is the same or slower than the cameras maximum flash sync speed then the H icon will not be displayed in the viewfinder.

The flash does not bother the players?, I wonder why High School allow to use flash (low light environment)...please some one explain this small issue to me...

obs: I am pretty sure that Football College will not allow use flash during the game...

What is the effect of the flash taken pics at 1/500 using the High Sync feature....

Thanks...

alfonso...it is ok to use flash at all football games.....if they say you cant then they are wierd. i know at the football games at night that i've shot at....there wasnt a pro photographer without a flash.....given that its a low light conditions....now if its at a big D1 school or in the NFL.....the lights are bright enough and they probably have wireless transmitters to make strobes go off in each corner of the stadium so they dont use flashes there
