The kit 18-70 lens for my D70s is on backorder. I am using a Tamron 28-200 LD for right now. I am thinking of getting a Sigma 18-200 DC or 28-300 DG. Are any of these as good as the Nikon? Should I cancel the Nikon order and get one of these? Any other suggestions?

All Nikkor AFD, AFS and AF lenses are 'good' for the D70s. You can also use AI(S) lenses, but without metering.
The 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 AFS lens is a superb general purpose lens.

Personally I also like and use the 85mm f/1.8, the 180mm f/2.8, the Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 and the 24mm f/2.8 a lot. All these lenses perform wonderfully well on a D70(s).

Tamron 90mm Macro
Tokina 12-24mm
Nikon 50mm 1.8D
The kit lens
Nikon 70-200VR

That would be my ideal lense selection :P

I like the pictures you have taken with your D70. The macro shots with the Sigma are good. I was primarily wondering what would be the best all around lens. The kit lens seems to be the lens of choice in this forum. I can't wait to try it.

It beats the kit lens, and will give the 17-55mm a run for it's money.

I skipped the kit lens and went directly to this lens. It saves me from taking a loss due to selling of the kit lens.

Incredible lens, incredible value. Focus is not as fast, and it's not SWM, but other than that, the focus on mine is dead on, it's sharp, bright, clear, and close focusing too.

On the subject of lenses for the D70, I was speaking to a manager of a well known camera store in town and he said there is a tendancy for all non-Nikon lenses to exhibit color shifting when used on a Nikon camera (said this tendency applies to all SLRS with lenses other that those made by the same manufacturer of the camera). Since I am currently shooting JPEG and am thinking of purchasing a macro lense for my D-70. Before I make a decision , I was wondering if anyone else considered color shifting to be a significant issue. Thanks.
