Weekly sports thread Sep 10th

Thanks for your comments and suggestions, Stephen. I hope to get closer to the action for a coming game. I actually know the school photographer pretty well (he is in the background in the third shot), so I will ask him about access.

One thing I had never noticed before was how much the pros move around the field during the game. It looks like you can get quite a workout from being on the sidelines.

Thanks again,

Chris

How do you set the size for your crops? Do you use a standard size?

Hello All,

Below are some pictures from a Sunday afternoon NCAA Division III Men's Soccer game. These are all with the 1DII, 1.4x, and 70-200/2.8L IS. I tried shooting the first half with the 2x instead, and wasn't happy at all with the results -- there was a noticeable loss of contrast and a few shots showed very noticeable CA, which hasn't been a problem with the 1.4x. Even after Photoshopping, the shots with the 2x were clearly inferior--some good ones, but nothing rivaling the 1.4x. I think I'll reserve the 2x for my 135/2L (I'm still contemplating a 300/2.8L - maybe next year). I was also surprised how dark the viewfinder was at f/5.6 vs. f/4. I switched to the Ec-A focusing screen a few weeks ago, which is absolutely great; I wonder if that's part of the issue with viewfinder brightness.

ISO 100, daylight WB, wide open. All are Photoshopped crops (levels adjustments and Focus Magic to sharpen) that are downsampled to 700x467 (or 467x700) pixels by BreezeBrowser Pro. More shots, including 100% versions, are available here...

Now granted I was drinking many beers and this was my first time EVER shooting a sporting event, here are two pictures from the Milwaukee Brewer game taken with my 350D and Canon 28-135 IS lens this past Friday night.

This past weekend I went to Troy University (Division 1-A football) in Alabama and took pictures at the football game. I'm no the best at footbal because I have a hard time figuring out if they are gonna pass the ball or throw it (I'm a girl I've never played football). Anyway here are some of them. none are cropped or anything.

(This one was way late on the play but it still looked kinda cool)

(This one is smoky because of the fireworks and I like it because the exxpression on the face of the trumpet player looks exactly like one of the statues they have of the TroyTrojan)

So anyways I didnt get that many pics. I was only on the field for about half of the game. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ya he got his 1D back and his 70-200 f/2.8

I got to use the borrowed lens and he used both his body and the borrowed 20D with his 70-200 f/2.8 and his 300 f/4. I was so sad today when we had to send the extra lens back. :( I am trying to find a used 70-200 f/2.8 if any one knows one for sale.

Thanks. I thought it was decent lighting for a night time game. Much better than high school. I had a blast down on the field of a college game. It was just hard to fight for a spot with all the other photographers. But I still had a blast I just wish i had got better pics but I guess it comes with experience. A parent of one of the band members that I took a picture of is already asking to buy it from my some that made me happy.

I would be taking pics of my college games for my school paper but I am in FAU's band so I can't. Anyway thanks for looking any any advise is greatly appreciated.

The typical setting... poorly lit gym and high school volleyball. I just got the 135L today and wanted to give it a try... only got to shoot through a game and a half. I love this lens already. Not sure if these shots do it justice. It focusses very fast and the images are great when I'm on the mark. The ones here that have any lack of sharpness, are the problem of the shooter... me. Used a 1DM2, Manual, f/2, 1/500, ISO800. I don't shoot in this gym much. I should have punched it up to ISO1600 and got a little more shutter speed to freeze the ball and hands.

I might be selling my 80-200 2.8L. My ankle is starting to hurt to much for me to be out running up and down football fields.
