R1/Plastic coate magnisium body?

I reaslise that plastic is ok. But I was just curious because Phil says it is plastic coated metal frame. Steve at one time said it was a magnisium ally body, and over at dpnow they say it is all a plastic body. Just wondered what is up with that. All of these people have had the cam in their hands at one point. Why do we get such varying reports? Guess we will have to waite and see.............Thanks

Put it this way: The camera will feel great if it feels solid, feels substantial, and feels relatively weighty. We're accustomed to that out of the F-series, too, right? We're not really "feeling" the texture of the metal of the F828. You can't feel that because the chassis has been overlaid with plastic and rubber.

What the camera is made of won't actually matter if it "feels" right in the hand.

We all care about theimages but to me and others the feel of the camera is important, too.

The R1 seems a little ugly to me, but I really don't care if the images are good. My D2X has more rubber under the hand than metal and as heavy as it is, I don't expect it to do well in a drop on a hard surface. I have dropped my Nextel Blackberry many times and watched it bounce two or three times and it work fine and still does. Yep plastic can be good.

What comes out of the printer is the most important.

maybe you were right, in fact, i think r1 is a range by its own now and i've learned from the posts this camera is goin to be housed with plastics, not a problem to me, but of course magnesium alloy is really a big bonus! sigh.........

It just would have made the price and the weight go up way too much. It is already heavier than the F828 which was metal. Could you imagine how heavy the R1 would be if it was metal?

That pre-production model looks like it is made of cheap plastic
and people from this forum who have touched a pre-production medel
described it as being made of cheap plastic.
It is quite possible for them to change the material and use
plastic of higher quality; I certainly wouldn't mind a
policarbonate/kevlar composite or something similar; I might
actually prefer it, because it would be lighter and still very
resistent to impacts. However, the pre-production sample was made
of very cheap plastic- PE, PP or something similar, basically it
felt cheap and I strongly disliked it. If it collided with a tree
or a rock, it would spill guts all over. With my E1, if it falls on
a rock, a chunk of rock will most likely break off.
Danijel, I second this view:

My own experience: When building instrumentation for use in construction equipment (a v.hazardous environment!) we used polycarbonate housings to protect the electronics and withstand the shocks, and I they always survived and provided protection when other things broke. Besides, don't they make body armour and bullet proof screens out of plastic too?
