Tokina 12-24 at the Beach

I love the colors and the images are sharp, but there is one thing, especially, that bothers me -- the camera is tilted in almost every shot. This is particularly troublesome with water shots because I keep expecting the ocean to flow downhill to the right.

What I have found is that with a wide angle lens there is some distortion always but it is more prominant when the lens is at an angle to the subject. If you can shoot straight on or perpendicular to a house, etc. it will look much less distorted than if you shoot up or down at a building, etc. This picture is another one that I took and coverted to B&W. If you look at the fence you can see some distortion because I was low shooting upwards.

The depth and tone are beautiful. I'm about to 'go digital'
SLR-wise and my greatest worry is getting a decent ultra wide angle
(minimum 20mm equiv). I've been eyeballing the Tokina, but am
worried about the pincushion distortion at the wide end of the zoom
range. Could you post a picture that shows the distortion (or lack
thereof) more clearly? For example, a building or something, a
subject with a lot of parrallel lines both horizontal and vertical.

Thanks.

I really tried to use the grid lines to line up the horizon but I found it especially difficult. Maybe this is due to the lens. Do you have any tips to fix this? I guess I could adjust them slightly in PS.

I went into PS and used the Arbitrary Rotate Canvas function on a few of these and they look alot better. I am not going to repost them but check my PBase gallery link to see the differences. Thank you for pointing out this flaw.

Please don't get me wrong- I'm notjudging the quality of the lens as I don't know enough to do so.

But I will say that your pictures show very well that it's no use in trying to discrene minor differences in lens attributes like sharpness, flare and god knows what else when the subject is so important. Your pictures are so well composed that it's of little importance if they are taken with a D70 or a Canon D30, with a Tamron, Sigma or Tokina- they are great because of your composition (and maybe PP too).

Thanks for sharing !

It's a trap I seem to be falling for myself these days.

Hi there

Beautiful shots / colours

Please have a look at my Cyprus sunset - 18-70 kit plus polarizer,

Well, she was impressed. Her only comment (other than admiring oohs and ahs from your gallery) was,"And how much is that lens?" Which is actually a good sign...

Thanks for the nudge :)
