Weekly sports thread Sep 10th

I tried a few new things today, with mixed results. The conditions were all over the place which didn't help, but it was fun altogether. First time using a prime (85mm f/1.8) at this kind of event, and it was great! I'm starting to get dissatisfied with the image quality of my 17-40mm f/4L at apertures greater than f/5. It has a kind of dreamy blur feeling to it. Also used 580EX to apply fill flash, but wish it could recycle fast enough to satisfy the 20D's 5fps.

Your timing is good but they look a bit soft. Did you use noise reduction software ? What shutter speed and ISO were you getting.

Daniel,

Your timing is got to be the best i've every seen, to me football is difficult to shoot. What I'm finding out, if you have to think about whats going to happin, it's already too late :)

How many shots are you taking on a typical Friday night?

How many are keepers?

What's workin for ya in terms of settings on camera and flash?

I would like to move up to the MKII, I'm using the 20D, with the 580 flash, but I'm wondering if I would have more keepers with the better focal points on the MKII.

Keep up the good work, I enjoy our work :)

Thanks. After 4 years I'm getting better ;-) And your right, if you have to think about it, it's to late.
How many shots are you taking on a typical Friday night?
It depends on lighting. Ealy in the seasom when the sun is still up and I can shoot without flash for the first half I take about 700 or so. Were into game 3 and the sun is going down sooner so this past Friday I shot about 550. When I'm shooting all flash maybe 150-200. With 8.5 FPS it doesn't take long to fill a card ;-) I figure if I didn't take a shot I can't go back and get it so I shoot a lot and toss them if they are not good. Once in a while you get a really good one.
How many are keepers?
Depends on what you mean by keeper. I don't get to many OOF, maybe 5% or less. Some games more some less. Of the 5-700 shots I whittle them down to 100-150 that I post on a web site for the school.
What's workin for ya in terms of settings on camera and flash?
With flash I use manual 1/400~1/500 @ 2.8. I use a 550EX on a Pro-T bracket, with CPE2 battery pack and 2500 Nimh batteries. When I shoot a whole game with flash I change the batteries at half time so I have a fresh set each half. I can shoot about 2 FPS with flash sometimes 3 depending on distance. I alos use + and - FEC on the flash rather than reduced power like 1/16 or 1/32. I tried that but results are to unpredictable. With reduced power your range is a fixed range, and you get over/under exposure. With - or + FEC you get automatic exposure, requardless of range, its just reduced or increased based on the amount of FEC dialed in. -FEC for closer in and +FEC for farther away. I also use high speed sync. I've found out anything under 1/400 I get blur. I also shoot RAW with flash and process with C1PRO. Much better results than shooting JPEG. I use 1600~3200 ISO. Lower than that you get to dark a background and that just flash look.
I would like to move up to the MKII, I'm using the 20D, with the
580 flash, but I'm wondering if I would have more keepers with the

Most likely you would get more keepers. I went from a 10D and its like going from dial up to cable. The AF and 8.5 FPS are amazing.
Keep up the good work, I enjoy our work :)
Thanks

Yes, I am in Clawson. Bay City is a nice area, lot of history to that town.

Anything that can be shot at less than 1/500 is simply moving too slow to be of interest.

Nice shots. Do you have info on them? Camera, lens, etc.

On this one, it's a good concept, but your autofocus locked on the fog or the players behind the player you want to be the point of interest. In action shots, you don't ever know exactly what's going to happen, but you know this this "entrance to the field" is going to happen each home game. I'd put this shot on my list of pictures I'm going to keep doing until I get one that's perfect.
