This international bike race is held every year over Labor Day weekend. It's usually over cast, which the bikers love, although I'd prefer sun shine. This was the first time I was able to shoot it with a digital camera. All shots with my Xt and either 17-85 or 70-300. I appreciate any comments or suggestions:

Hi Evan:

Thanks for the kind words. The 2nd image was shot at: 1/15 sec, f16, 44mm and ISO 100. The 3rd was at: 1/125 sec, f11, 72mm and ISO 400.
Thanks again.

That hill (Filmore St.) is a killer. The rider in shot 2 was very far in the lead when I took that shot - perhaps 2 minutes. After the 5th lap, he was far behind the leaders. Thanks for the comments.

I especially like the 3rd one. Nice Serotta too.

Just FYI: in previous years, this race was held the weekend following Labor Day (no overlap with Burning Man). This year marked the absence of Lance Armstrong and the women’s race. However, Ivan Basso, Levi Leipheimer, and George Hincapie did the race this year.

It looks like you got a good spot up near the top of the Filmore St. hill. I couldn't get near the baracade near the top of the hill so I had to shoot from lower down.

Same story on Taylor Street: Very crowded at the top, not crowded on the bottom. I shot from the bottom. The action wasn't as exciting as at the top, but at least I got Wegmann's big move on the final lap:

He caught Lieswyn and McCartney near the top:

Compare the crowds in the two photos.

After the leaders passed, I walked to the top of the hill. There were some people in front of me, but I think they added to this shot, since they were returning Levi Leipheimer's salute:

There was another bike race in the same area the next day, the Giro di San Francisco, but only a handful of out-of-state riders stayed for that. My photos from that race are at

Nice shots. I really like the photographer with the long lens in the first photo and, as you pointed out, the interaction between the rider and crowd in the last.

Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it very much.

Thanks for your comments. The photographer's cheering is what makes that shot interesting. I'm glad his lens was too long for him to shoot at that point.
