I received my BG-E3 battery grip for my Rebel XT today. I know it's probably been said before, but WHOA....it's a whole new camera. I'm no pro (which goes without saying), but I am simply amazed at how well this camera now feels. It fits almost like a glove. I'm so happy my pinky has a home! Not only that, but the added weight seems to have balanced out the camera. It also looks great! You can't tell me that's not part of the reason to get one. If you don't have this grip for your XT, I highly suggest you get one because it just feel "right". I'd own this grip just for the feel alone.

If you DO have this grip, how do you use it? Huh? What I mean is, do you find yourself using the vertical grip often? When I was working with it I found myself going to the vertical grip while in "stand-by" mode holding the camera at my chest if I knew I was going to take a few vertical shots. But when I'm already shooting horizontal and the camera is up to my eye, I found it more comfortable just to turn the camera vertical without moving my grip to maintain a firm hold on it. Does this sound right?

Also, I assume most shooters use the neck strap. It sort of gets in the way when "going vertical", but I found that I can use my thumb to "ride" it out of the way while changing positions.

So which way is more stable...it seems to me that both are. Comments?

I understand your enthusiasm, I felt the same way when I got the grip for my 300d.

It takes awhile to break the habit of shooting that way, it's more comfortable because you're use to shooting that way. I made an effort to use the grip for vertical, and once it becomes habit, it's much better and you'll be glad you learned to go that way.

loose the neck strap. I have a loop of cord that goes over my wrist and is attached to the tripod socket, and also a homemade hand strap. The camera is more secure, more comfortable than using a neck strap, nothing to get tangled.

haha yea i got my 300D grip a few weeks back and i love it. Im having the same problem with the neck strap, which is why im gonna get the hand strap asap. i used one on a 20D and it was great with the hand strap. remember though then you have to remove your hand to switch to the vertical position and its a bit of an awkward switch, but the secure feeling you get with it is awesome.

I've got the BG-E1, because I have a 300d of course, and I haven't taken it off since I first attached it. Like you said, it's like a whole new camera. Much nicer to hold, and far better balanced.

I too like my battery grip very much. I don't use it all the time, but when I'm going to be out all day, it gets put on. I purchased a Zing hand strap ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=113804&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation ), and that keeps the camera securely attached to my hand. However, I left on the strap, so if I need to change lenses or get tired, I could wrap it around my neck. Having two straps is very little bother, but YMMV.

I got the battery-grip for my XT shortly after I got my XT.

I put it on the camera, and it hasn't been off since!

It does nothing but totally enhance every aspect of the XT.
Canon could have just molded this thing into the body of the XT,
and then nobody would need to buy it as an "add-on"!

Hehehehe!

I wouldn't shoot without it.
It ROCKS!

I haven't gotten around to buying a grip yet for my XT. I had a grip for my DRebel.

With grip attached, how tall is the XT?

I recall the DRebel with grip was around 6" high, which severly limited the camera bags I could use.

...I have the grip too -- got it so I could use AAs -- and for verticle shots I do as you -- don't ever use the additional shutter or other buttons either -- I just leave the on/off switch in the off positon...

when i have my flash ontop and my Sigma lense, it is very top and front heavy, the battery grip balances it out and gives me alot more "griP'

I can fit the 300d with grip (that's bigger than yours) with the bigma (sigma 50-500mm zoom - BIG!!) into my lowepro micro trekker 200 backpack. I still have room for the kit lens, ipod, pda, wallet several Bird ID books and a map and some left over.

Aside of course from the fact it enhances balance with the longer lenses. Plus really convenient vertical shooting.

For years and years I've lived without a vertical grip. But when I first used the grip for the 300D nearly 2 years ago, man oh man, how did we ever live without a vertical grip? :-)

Just like mobile phones ...

Putting the BG-E3 into the 350D or Rebel XT, the DSLR turn out to be a different camera. The look and feel are totally different! That accessory is worth to invest. In addition, ha ha, this is one of the reason why I chose the Canon instead of Nikon (D70s).

See, I was just the opposite. I bought the battery grip, used it for a week and then sent it back because I didn't like the feel or balance of the camera. Especially when setting the XT down and having it flop forward like a drunken sailor. It sort of defeated the purpose of getting a small DSLR for me. And I could never quite get used to using it properly on vertical shots and the like either. But I'm in the small minority it seems.

Do you get a battery with it?

I assume one battery moves from the camera move into the grip?

if so, do you need to buy another battery for it to work?

Has anyone used rechargable AA in their battery grip? Can you comment on the experience and if it's worth the bother?

Right now I just have the one battery that came with the camera in the magazine. I'm assuming that two camera batteries would be better than 6 rechargable AA's...but I'm not sure....that's why I'm asking.

Thanks!
