he says some friend of his just came back from Russia where he bought the 5D. My dad held it, on the phone he told me it felt alot like his 20D and it wasn't all that slow compared.

I asked him, was he sure it was a genuine 5D and not like a 20D with 5D badge, he goes, "well it has a bigger screen and the viewfinder is like 1Ds, so i think it's real."

is this possible, i am still shocked i was not there in his studio....

So why not a pre-release camera.

On the other hand, it could just be a mistake concerning the somewhat similar Russian camera, the Zaika 5D. It's a sturdy little machine but has lots of sensor noise, mostly from the plutonium battery.

Now watch what you say or they’ll be calling you a radical, liberal, fanatical, criminal. Won’t you sign up your name, we’d like to feel you’re αcceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

The Zaika 5D is an awesome camera; had the reviewers used a prime instead of a zoom, the pictures would have been much better. Also; while noisy at higher ISO's at ISO25 the Zaika is breathtaking. I'm thinking of buying one myself but hear an even better one is coming out in two years so I might hold out.

Down to one zoom and loving it!

Thats a hoot. Actually my very first 35mm camera was from Russia and called a Zenet B (I think) and I remember I conned my mother into lending me the $64 to buy it. I still have black and white images I took with it and they aren't all that bad. Had a top shutter speed of 1/500.

....LOOOL :) .. do you belive your father's friend can get 5D in Russia? :)
That's funny!
Is here someone know the reality of life in Russiia? :)

Look: - now, when everyowere people talking about 5D, they discuss on the Foto.ru forum nonsens of Canon vs. Nikon vs. Minolta... and most of the time just abuse each other :)

After I place some staff about 5D there, they found so much "problems" in it... ( just in case that only a few of them can really AFFORD it :)

You might be able to buy a torpedo someplace in the former Soviet Union, but not on the street in Moscow. I tried to buy a basic full-auto AK47 in a Siberian frontier town a lot wilder than Moscow and those days are definitely over. Easier to find one in California.

there are photographers out there that have their hands on pre-production models...they just can't talk about it. EMBARGO.

Cameras are no different than cars, software, phones, etc. They all are field tested before the production release.

There is nothing new in the 5D's hardware other than the body, invisible 6 AF points, mirror, shutter and the LCD...from my first looks. Most are just improvements, not radical redesigns.

The new parts are the software elements and as that can be the very last thing that is upgraded in any electronic device...is it illogical to think that Canon or anybody isn't getting input from its target users already? I know from personal experience that it happened with a local pro testing the 20D 2 months before its announcement.

How many 1DsMKII's were at the 2004 Olympics in Athens...a month before it was even announced?

Could the assembly lines already be running waiting only for final software tweaking?

Seems possible...actually likely...if the 5D is going to be the big seller Canon predicts.

I don't know anything about underground entrepeneurs in Siberia, never been there. And I must admit that I don't know where one would go in Moscow to make a deal on a torpedo. But as of late last year - and I don't think it's changed that much - an AK-47 (or AK-74 or AK-101 through 108), quite available, I'm told around $300 (up from the $100 of five years ago). Grenades, not as available as they once were but they are out there for around $75-80 if thats what you think you need to defend your home.

New body, new sensor, new main circuit board, several new ASICS, new AF board, new shutter, new AF module, new trigger circuit, new power management circuit, new mirror assembly, new LCD, new programming for everything. Not radical, but almost no common major components.

Yes.

Yes, the halflife of DSLRs really is getting quite ridiculous.

....a six-pack of counterfeit Leicas for me while he's there, assorted colors please, but no **** versions.

Seriously though, they aren't selling them yet, but there may be some field testing going on with some select pros.
