--It will take one to two months to get the water out.
And to think there are still people looting there.
Very sad.

hanging in the sky on his way to Biloxi :( I don't know where they will be landing since I understand the airport is closed. I know what he is doing is important, and needed and hopefully he and his team will be of some help. They will have access to helicopters, heavy equipment, emergency supplies etc. The team has satellite phones so work-related communications will happen - but I'm afraid the whole cell system must be out down, so I'm not expecting to hear from him anytime soon.

He's not particularly artsy in his photography - but he does have a little fuji P&S with him so I'll try to post some pics when he returns.

A horrible tragedy on a staggering scale and my prayers go out for the people along the Gulf coast. Below are 5 shots of the French Quarter I took this January with my 20D. These and 12 other photos can be found in this gallery...

Very nice gallery Gordon.

I share your views on the tremendous destruction from the hurricane. It's difficult to fathom the extent of the physical damage, and heartbreaking to imagine the personal losses of so many many people.

In the future a visit to new Orleans will not look the same, however this is only a minor issue compared to the suffering, the loss of life, the loss of homes and the loss of jobs, to name just a few sad effects of this hurricane.

Thanks for posting pics from happier times.

Jim

Thank you. I do have a couple in color too.

But then i saw a couple of postcards in black and white of the beignet and I thought to do the same thing. I always that inspiration from postcards ;-)

By the way, for all of you who have never been at the Cafe' du Monde, I am european and I am very used to cafes, but this one has something special about it. It is a busy, sticky place with powdered sugar all over the places. To take a shot like the ones you have seen here you need to do a great job cleaning all around, possibly arranging the beignet to look good in a nice pyramid shape and then after the picture, while you enjoy the beignet and the chicory coffee au lait, you need to preserve your camera from getting a ton of that sugar on it (not an easy thing to do on a small table while you are surrounded by tons of people...

I wonder what is left of this place. I wonder when we will see images of these places again...
Poor New Orleans, a tragedy hit such a joyful place.

God yes - we still have not heard or been able to get any news of my parents. We are terrified after seeing all the pictures of the destruction around Biloxi.

The lived at 334 Fairview Dr. Fairview is off of Pass Rd, west of Keesler AFB. They are up in age - in the 70's with many health problems (Dad has congestive heart failure and is diabetic, mom has too many issue to list). If he just somehow get over there - and let you know how they are - I would be so ever grateful to both of you.

Please let me know as soo as you find out anything.

Thanks,
Rich

These areas will surely look different now. We can only hope that the people can be helped as quickly as possible.

Rich, send me an email (in my profile - with their names too - and phone number (I know the lines are down but every bit of info will help). I will text message my husband, but my fear is his phone will not receive anything now - he is there in Biloxi by now I think :(

If that fails I can ask his supervisor if he would use the satellite phone to relay the info.

they haven't made it to their staging area yet so he was able to call me from an AFB out of the disaster area. So he now has their address but it would be better to get him the names too. They are spending the night at the base so try to send it before morning.

I have tears in my eyes just thinking about how much you must be worried! I hope you hear something soon.

And bless your heart Cindy, for your kindness and offer to help...

You and your parents are in my prayers Rich...
