Circuit City Rebates a Total Scam

Caveat Emptor--buyer beware! I recently bought a card reader that advertised a $20 rebate. I sent in a copy of the completely filled out rebate form along with the sales receipt. Circuit City sent back a letter saying: "Sorry, but since you didn't include the sales receipt there is no rebate." I KNOW I SENT IT IN. Well, fortunately I made a copy and will try again. But, I think this is a total scam--they claim you didn't send the receipt, which you did, and now you can't return the item since you mailed the rebate center the receipt! Wow. Maybe others have not had this experience but I have talked to a couple folks who sent in paperwork and never heard a thing from this outfit.

Will be my last trip to Circuit City. Ever.

Watch out!

Sorry to hear of your bad experience. Rebates seem to get a bad rap because of stories like yours but I've never had any problem with any rebates. I just got $80 in rebate checks from Circuit City earlier this summer. I hope you're able to get some resolution to your situation.

I think I will simply return the item. Copy of my receipt says an unconditional money back guarantee if not satisfied for any reason within 30 days. So, maybe I'll just return it and call it a good lesson learned.

I had the same problem with circuit city and a 512mb sd card purchased from them. I sent everything in, just like the directions said to do, in plenty of time and having bought it way before the rebate expiration, and they still said it was purchased too late. They wanted the orginal receipt(which I'd sent them originally), not a copy so I couldn't prove when i'd purchased it. argh. so I don't fall for rebates with them anymore.

It's not them it's the manufacturers, but as the sellers of the product I think the store must be accountable. I am waiting for a rebate myself and have copies of everything including the store ad. If I get rejected I will take this all down to the store and demand that they give me the rebate because they advertised it and they can deal with the rest of the bs. If that doesn't work I might "accidentally" stumble while walking through the lcd monitor aisle.

I never had trouble with rebates before but sometimes it does take time. Do remember to make copies and write everything down.... do everything that the rebate says to.....

LOL to your 'accidental' stumble ;)

Other than being slow I have never had any difficulty getting rebates from Circuit City...

Sorry for your bad experience.

I had rebates from couple of resellers. Some of them never show up. I had a bad experience with Office depot and Comp USA. I have heared Staples rebates is good. Some online sellers like Buy.com also give a tough time with rebates. (Buy.com has the maximum number of MIRs for memor cards).

My $0.02 worth!

I had no problem with Circuit city rebates.

Why do you think companies like those stupid rebates? Half the people don't send them back and the other half have problems collecting. If they wanted to give you a deal they would reduce the cost on the product.

I don't think there is anything in your tale of woe that finger points CC....Unfortunately, rebates often yield the greatest savings but like the old adage goes "there's no such thing as free lunch". I am happy to report that so far, I have gotten all of my rebates PAID without a hitch. You followed the golden rule though which is to keep a copy of the rebate forms and receipts. But I don't think CC is any better/worse than any other company. The person who opened your letter probably misplaced your receipt. I keep a separate file with all of my rebate info in case something like this happens....

I've always gotten my rebates but sometimes not without a hassle - and you may get yours too if you try.

Copy everything so you will have something to respond with later if there is a problem. Follow the directions precisely - especially requests for UPC code, "Proof of purchase", and sales receipt. Obviously, they want to make it difficult - you already own the product and they will have a greater profit if you don't get the refund. I've gotten refunds from CC, Comp USA, Best Buy, Staples, OfficeMax to name a few, but I am also prepared to write a letter with my "Copies" if I get a rejection, if the rebate is large enough to take the effort. I then have to remember to cash the check. Ever notice how easy it is to overlook the thing when it comes in the mail and misplace it afterwards. And they have to be cashed pretty quickly.

Read Aaron's previous post VERY carefully as he has outlined the necessary steps to "winning" the game of rebates. Recently, I got a Canon ip3000 Printer Free but only after filling out Three Separate Rebate Forms...you have to see it as a "game" (like the companies do) - Cover Your Tracks and You Will Get Your Money (eventually). Finally, if you can't really afford to wait 8-12 weeks for the check to be mailed, don't buy the product. That simple.

Keep copies of all rebates and you can track most rebates online. I have received all my rebates. There should be an 800 phone number on receipt to call if you have a problem.

Sorry, to hear of your problems. I'm retired an enjoy the games we play getting my rebates. So far we are tied. :)) I agree "Staples" seems to be the fastest sending rebate checks.

Best Buy I understand is doing away with store rebates and are now offering Instant savings. But still offer Manufacturers rebates. :((
