C2100 moon with ETX 125 scope

Nice, very nice. How did you attach your 2100 to your scope. That's the only accessory I will need extra to buy once I get my camera in....could you tell me where you got that piece ?

Gary,

I'm just holding the camera up to the eyepiece of the scope. No physical connection. One tip would be to use an eyepiece with a lot of eye relief. That means that you can keep your eye back an inch or so from the eyepiece and still get a good focus. I've been using a 40MM eyepiece that I bought from http://www.surplusshed.com ; I believe the maker was Paul Rini.

talk about a steady hand....Did you have your drive enabled on the ETX...I would love to try this with my Meade LX-10....I can tell Saturday is not going to come fast enough :) (day my camera is supposed to be here :)

Thanks,

Gary

Gary,

The speed was 1/100 sec so it didn't require an especially steady hand. The aperature was 6.3. I was using the drive but I probably would have gotten a slightly clearer picture if I would have turned the drive off for the picture. I'm sure it was creating a slight vibration. I'm going to give a shot at Saturn if I can just make myself get up at 4:00 AM.

Jan,

Thanks for your kind words.

The telescope kind of makes it an unfair comparision. The ETX telescope costs a little more than the B300 as well so I guess it should look a little better. You can see more of the craters on the moon when it isn't completely full. The darker edges always show amazing craters and mountains.

I intended to encourage others to give it a try as well. You don't need an "expensive" telescope to get good detail on the moon. A fairly inexpensive 60 MM telescope (around US$150) could yield similar results on the moon. The ETX offers a lot of other bells and whistles such as computer tracking but I'm not using a lot of magnification so that isn't required. You don't even have to spend money on attachments to connect the camera to the telescope. These photos were made just holding the camera about 1/2 inch away from the eyepiece.

Thanks for your kind comments.

Not true. If you want just an "ordinary" picture, a 60mm scope will do OK. But the bigger the scope, the more surface details are made available. Resolution is directly related to the aperture of the scope, and this ETX is 5 inches (125mm) in diameter! And a good 60mm scope costs more than $150; more like $500 to $700 (Borgs, Vixen, Takahashi, etc.). You can pick up a 60mm spotting scope for $150 corrected for terrestrial use. But for astronomy, 'tain't no such thing as a "good" cheap telescope. You get what you pay for :-))
Thanks for your kind comments.

We'll just have to disagree on this one Barry. The level of detail that a 2MP digital camera can capture will appear similar on a 125MM or 60 MM scope when capturing the moon. Good moon results can be obtained on a $150 scope!
Thanks for your kind comments.
