My test of the Nikon D2x equipped with the AFS VR 200 mm f/2 G at the sled dods race french chanpionship is now translated into english at the address :
http://simpho.free.fr/alpirush/rushe.html

This 200 mm is a "must have" for any D2x owner involved in action photography (sport, wildlife).

About my wildlife shots, the 2/200 VR let me take photographs of butterflies in flight with only available light.
See details at : http://simpho.free.fr/ultra_rapide/ultra_e.html

Interesting reading, good design of the site. The D2X and the 200/2 looks like an incredible combo, and the photos are fantastic. The AF performance with the shallow DOF very impressive too.

I tried to read this too, but I came to a stop when the english ended - my french is really very, very bad...

Great!

I am really lusting over this lens!! I think I might bite the bullet in the next couple of months!!

Nice summary and excellent shots!

Very interesting read ... and you're right, it's a wonderfull combo (D2x and VR200). Good that this combo can survive such harsh weather. Here is a portrait shoot I did with @ f2.2 on D2x which also shows the fantastic bokeh IMO.

Apart from the f/2 vs the f/2.8, could you please advise how this lens beats the 70-200 VR? AS i'm very close to buying the 70-200, this will be an interesting comparison.

thanks

I keep a picture of this lens and the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8, under my pillow.

It is a close as I will come for a couple of years.

Congratulations on your ownership.

If you ever want to trade for my first born........

Thank you. Your work has added some weight to my decision to get one, especially the capability working in such a harsh condition.

The 2/200 VR is sharper than the 70-200 mm even wide open at f/2 especially when used with the D2x.

And the bokeh is just perfect : I have never seen such a bokeh with any other Nikkor lens.

Result : the association of very high sharpness, magnificant bokeh and short DOF at f/2 makes terrific shots.

There is more differences between the 2/200 VR and the 70-200 VR used with the D2x than between a 300 mm f/4 and a 300 mm f/2,8 used with a film body.

The 200 F2 and 70-200 F2.8 are two different animals.

The 70-200 is a great all around lens. Just its size makes it handy for a lot of events where you don’t want 6 pounds of glass. It’s handholdable, while the 200 F2 is not.

The 200 F2 is perfect when you need more speed, or a little more reach. Works great with both the 1.4 and 1.7 TC. This is my preferred weapon of choice for shooting in the dark.

When I’m using the 200 F2, I will also have a 70-200. While both have the same focal length, the ability to quickly grab a shoot at 70 to 200 handheld makes it very handy.

If I was only going to own one…it would be the 70-200.

I mostly shoot sports and a little news.

... useful for a lot of subjects too.

I've got more, including some close encounters (15-20 feet) with bears but I don't want to "boar" you. This is a superb lens... and I can see it getting all sorts of use in the field. By the way, I have so far used it handheld 100% of the time. It's heavy, but very well-balanced.
