I have definitely decided to purchase an HP printer.

The following printers are available locally for immediate purchase:

932 @ $130
940 @ $150
952 @ $150
960 @ $200
990 @ $300

Are there any major differences in these models?

Is the most expensive one going to give me any better pictures than the cheapest one? Any input you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Personally, I'd opt for the HP 940 as it has the newest technology at the lowest price. The photo quality output of all those printers will be identical with the only major differences being the duty cycle, speed, and in the case of the 990, an IR port for PDA printing.

Norm, I have a 970 CSE. I know it isn't on your list but all these are comparable to it. I bought the 970 beacuse of the duplex feature. It was cheaper then getting the printer and then buying the module. The photo quality is great when you print 2400 x 1200 on HP Photo Matte paper and the 932,952, 990 from what I know of can produce the same quality just at different speeds. Long note short, they will all work and give great results but how much can you afford.

P.S. Try to see if you can get a 970 CSE it will give you the most bang for your buck.

I just bought the 952...terrific and quiet. Separate tray for 4x6 makes this model very sought after. Pic's are as good as you'll get with any ink jet!!

I can endorse the 990cxi. Super fast and whisper quiet even on 'best'. I love the way the text can be printed on both sides of the paper before it spits out the sheet. If all printers did that, we could save a forest or two! Stunning colour prints too.

Norm,

I have the HP 932C. I did a lot of research before purchasing my printer and decided to to with it because of the quality. Its a supperb printer. I have the Sony DSP1 digital camera and use it to take personal pictures. I then print my work on the HP 932C at 8x10 with a res. of 2400 dpi. I use photo paper and I get proffesional quality.

I compared the other that you have mentioned, and the only difference is the speed. The quality is excatly the same.

Hope this helped.

They all use the same print engine but have some different features and speeds so decide which features you need and what printout speed you will accept. I have a 990 and I really like the duplexer and the speed. Don't have much need for the IR most of the time but have used it a little. So, if you don't need the duplexer, IR and don't care about a little bit speedier printout then you can save some money by going with one of the other models. I have friends who have the 930/32 and have been plesed with the print quality but felt it was somewhat slow and cheaply made.

Hey , What do you want for $97.00? Actually , the lousy paper tray is the worst part of the 932C. Otherwise the quality output surely equals the rest of the line. JD

Terry,

Do you have any idea what the "newest technology" is on the 940? I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but I'm kind of confused about this new printer. I've looked at it at some stores, and I've also looked at the specs on the HP website; and I don't really see what's that different about it and some of the other HP's. It still has the PhotoRet III technology, the same maximum print resolution, and it uses the same color cartridge as the older models. It does seem to be using a different black cartridge from what my 930C uses. Other than this, I'm not sure I get it. I guess it is faster, and it seems to have a pretty large paper tray. It does seem to be a nice printer though at a good price.

I'm just not sure I really understand what HP's strategy is. Most of their newest printers don't seem to have anything that earthshattering in comparison to their older models. Seems like they'd be working on a 6 ink printer like Epson's. It's almost like they're coming out with new models just for the sake of saying they have new models out.

By the way, I really like my 930C. I think it's a tremendous printer for what it costs -- definitely one of the better bargains out there for a photo quality printer.

Regards,

Robert

Like I said, my friends who are using the 930 were happy with the print quality but not the construction, and, as you point out that's what you get for $97. Up to Norm to decide which of the 900s would best meet his needs. I know that I have been happy with my 990, although looking back I probably could have purchased one of the other 900s and still been happy. I have a feeling that HP might be coming out with some newer models (not just the 940) due to the fact that there has been a huge drop in prices on their 900 line and photosmart line. Unless they are just dropping the prices to be more competitive with other manufacturers??

The 940 is supposed to have the a higher capacity black cartraige. The color one is the same as well as the print quality. The 932C is a good deal.
