Some interesting shots and comments, no out and out raves besides the obvious from Phil, IMO. Some good quality in the shots, however nothing I don't think my "not worth mentioning" *istD coudn't deliver though.

Any thoughts?

Looks great to me. If I had a spare huge wad of cash, I might consider buying it...

It's expensive (perhaps not overpriced, but still expensive for me and many other people) and, perhaps not strangely, quite good.

I don't think there's much need to worry about this relating to Pentax though. It's not even in the same market.

I wonder when the full review comes out will it get a Highly
Recommended
Probably.

Assuming the final version of the Camera performs well then we will be talking about a camera that produces better images has lower noise and more megapixels than the 1Ds, which cost $8000 in 2002.

I find it interesting that the Canon hasn't even hit the stores and there is a preview. The DL has been out now for a month and nothing. When will we see a real comparison?

i think the mere fact that it was announced and it's from Canon means it will get a Highly Recommended. ;-)

The DL is a "nothing interested" DSLR and it has no significant meaning in the DSLR development. What Phil do and did are fully explainable indeed. When the *ist D was out, Phil did do the preview very quickly just becoz it was considerably more signifciant (the review was very late, though).

Even a thumb can be used as a measurement tool and that's why we get the 'rule of thumb'!

also, Canon has a mega-huge marketing machine, they're able to send out review samples almost immediately after press release, and they can get products on the shelves in very short order.

Yes. I've seen previews on several sites around the world and I know of a number of magazines that are working on previews as well. I believe that the Canon machine is able to provide samples to all the major review sites and magazines in just about every country where they do significant business.

Phil does not do full reviews of Beta products, rather he waits until he has the finished product in his hand before doing a full review of it. Canon usually manage to get their finished products onto the market and to reviewers very, very quickly.

Having said that Phil STILL hasn't reviewed the Canon 1DS Mk II; it was released in November 2004 and is Canon's flagship camera. I think that the time it took to do the Fuji S3 review coupled with some site issues meant that the camera had to go back to Canon before Phil was ready to review it.

I suppose now we will be able to see how the 1Ds Mk II compares to the 5D.

Yes, I am just excited to see the progress of digital photography equipment, no matter the company producing it. I mean, I don't have $3200 for a new camera and have a softspot for Pentax primes (old and new) so switching is not a consideration. But progress pushes the competition and gives us all a better product in the future.

And I say as an avid Pentax user: the sample pictures from the 5D are darn nice.

Tijean,

I have the *istD and a friend has the 20D. When I told him about the 5D preview data, he called Canon USA. The MRSP is $3299. The expected street price at B&H, etc. is $2499 and the camera will be there in late October or early November. I agree that $3299 is a bit steep but a full frame model for $2500 is a whole different story in my book.

That price may not be too far off.

Some German retailers already have it priced at 2699 Euros including VAT (I think German VAT is 16%), which is 2860 USD without VAT.

Of course in the UK the best current price is 2499 GBP including VAT at 17.5%, which is 3829 USD without VAT.

The UK RRP is 2539 GPB (4571 USD) inc. VAT which is 2161 GBP (3890 USD) exc. VAT

There is no import duty on digital cameras.

Talk about getting ripped off.

I agree, I hope Pentax can produce a full frame digital at affordable prices soon. I like Pentax's ability to produce true, off the film plane, TTL flash. Even leading DSLR marketers like Nikon and Canon cannot (or will not) provide the same capability in their top of the line DSLR cameras. The lowly Pentax *ist DS outperforms both the D2X and 1DS MkII in this category. Canon and Nikon users are stuck with inferior flash systems that can't read the light reflected off the sensor during flash exposure for real time TTL flash.
