FZ30 battery alternative?

Personally I'm just going to use a couple of my FZ20 batteries as
spares, until better-priced batteries come along. I'm not a fan of
external batteries, too bulky and awkward for my preferences, but
do have a DPS9000, and they do make a good emergency backup until
you get an adequate supply of normal batteries.
Interesting you feel that was Gary. I have at least 7 internal batteries for my fz1's and fz20 and I still prefer using the DPS9000. The only drawback is that you have to remove it to get to the battery and card. But with the fz30 that shouldn't be an issue. It is good to hear all sides because each user has their own preferences.

I will also try the fz20 batteries I have in the fz30 and see how it goes since I have such a large stock of them.

Looking at the photo of the DPS-9000 attached to the camera (FZ20?) which was posted earlier in this thread, it looks like the battery pack sticks out quite a bit at the back of the camera. Does this hinder use of the EVF at all? To me it looks like the battery pack would hit you in the mouth if you put your eye to the viewfinder LOL!

Perhaps one of the lucky new owners could stop taking photographs for a moment and take out their battery and measure its size (acurately). Then we might have an idea if it is like any exisitng alternative.

I'm sure it will. Might even look like it was designed for the FZ30 :)

Ahhhh I see, thank you... so I assume it will fit "better" on the
FZ30? Not stick out so much?

I can confirm that the FZ-20 battery works fine in the FZ-30 clicks right in and stays put, and that DPS-9000 works like a champ also, a whole afternoon of shooting with the DPS-9000 and I still has 4.5th's of a charge.

Can you confirm which power cable to use with the DPS9000 and the FZ30? Thanks.

Well I am at work but it's the same cable as the 20, maybe someone can post the model number of the cable?

Thanks for checking. Since I stocked up on FZ20 batteries for the great price from the ebay guy from China, I figured I could wait until something similar comes along for the 30.

I had hoped we wouldn't have to 'fill in' the curved void like some suggested, sounds like we don't. I'm pretty sure it's "not recommended" because they'd rather you stock up on the new batteries at $50 or more each. 8^)

I used one for an hour this morning no problems at all, I should do a test to see how many shots the same battery gives for the 20 and 30... but not until after my holidays

Yeah, but when you shoot 30,000 photos in an average afternoon, you can't be stopping to change batteries...8^) (sorry, couldn't resist, maybe I exaggerated a little...)

Anyway, it was the same story when the DPS9000 was on closeout and became popular for the Oly2100's. Some never looked at AA's again, even drilled holes so the door wouldn't have to stay open for the power plug, others just used it as a backup.

For me, my primary way of carrying either one is in a leather camera case on my belt, just big enough for the camera, media, batteries, lens cloth, and maybe a filter. The DPS makes it too bulky to fit.

With the 2100, having power connected also disables sleep mode, and the sleep mode on those is very useful, as well as keeping the battery from running down; on the FZ, the sleep mode is nothing more than shutting it off, so I just shut it off with the switch.

External battery?? Not if I can help it! This camera is big and heavy enough without having an extra weight hanging off of it. I'll look for spare internal batts.

The FZ30 batts are definitely a different shape than the FZ20's. I'd be surprised if they fit in physically. That would be a nice surprise for me, since I have 4 spares for the FZ20.

pffffffip :0) You are right, too busy shooting to want to stop for a battery change anyway. Give me a 1 G card in my fz20 and the DPS9000 and I'm set for a day and longer for power.

Yikes! I don't think I have the gumption to drill holes in my camera!

Yep, that would be a deciding factor for sure.

But that is the beauty of the DPS9000. I can leave the camera on for at least 3 hours for a couple different days. To be honest, I haven't ran down to less than 2 lights yet.

I won't be throwing out my stack of fz20 internal batteries though. I am relieved to know that the fz20 battery will fit and work in the fz30.

They are not completely different in shape, and the connectors are just in the same place and FZ20 batteries are smaller, that's how they can fit...

It's really a good news. I can buy 3rd party FZ20 batteries for about $15, they can come handy until the 3rd party FZ30 batteries arrive...
