Help! I read the flash guide book, Stafford's D70 book, and Tom Hogan's Guide and followed the instructions and hints but no triggering of the wireless flash. The flash is 4 feet from camera with sensor in clear view.

Settings: D70: commander mode, TTL
SB 800: tried "Master" , "Remote", and "SU-4" without any success.

Any suggestions?

This may be an obvious question but have you got the flash on the camera popped up?

1. Set camera flash mode to "Commander mode"

2. Flash - set to "Remote" and then select for "Channel 3" and "Group A"

3. Pop up the build in flash on the camera and then take a picture.

Reference - p.150 on Nikon D70 manual and p15 on SB800 manual

Comander mode, "Remote", CH3, group a....no flash except built in camera flash! What gives? I am holding flash in my left hand so that sensor faces camera flash but out of field of view of lens.

Do you have to do all of these setting in any order such as camera first with flash off or start with flash on camera then remove when wireless?

Here's what you need, and read it carefully.

1) Pop open your Nikon D70 flash. Then set it to commander mode in the menu.
2) Set your SB800 to "Remote" and channel 3, group A.

Try it again.

Nothing special about it. Just make sure your onboard is in commander mode TTL ,popped up, and your sb800 is actually IN the remote mode as well, ch.3, group A. won't work any other way without another SB800

Nikon- The #1 cause of Lens Lust since the Nikon F.

Not entirely true. The way specified is the correct way for TTL wireless flash but you can also do it with the SB in SU-4 and the camera set to manual flash. Ok, this way both flashes take part in the exposure but that can be a good thing too :)

When I did just that, the remote beeped but the flash came only from the pop-up camera flash. The back of the flash said: CH3, REMOTE, MZoom, 24mm, wireless flash sign, beep sign, and group C. Still no remote flash.

Well, it seems like the settings are correct. The on-board is popped up. I don't see why the remote SB800 didn't fire. Unless the 4 AA batteries are weak or if you're using the fifth in the special compartment, all five must be in good charged condition. I have had no problems firing two external SB800s.

Ok. What shooting mode are you in? Aperture?

You have to be in the A,P,S,M mode to use the commander mode. Or the SB800 won't fire. We all assume you shooting in Aperture mode?

No, it fires a series of short flashes, sort of like red-eye.

One thing I notice is that when I fire the camera, the on-board flash flickers and flashes (like a red-eye) and the SB-800 beeps and flashes a red "Ready" without firing! ?
