Well, I took your advice and ...

I'm guessing that you are using the default Parameter 2 setting and then use post-processing to enhance photos individually?

I use Set 1 (-1 Contrast, +1 Sharpness, +1 Saturation & 0 Color tone). I notice when I use -1 Contrast, it increases the dynamic range.

Bumping - Deliberately 'bumping' your message back to the top of the forum with no new content.

Dave, why do you think this rule exists?

Is there a reason why you bump over 50% of the posts in your
thread?

Maybe you should consider what this does to others seeking answers about
real camera questions?

If you can't add additional "content" about the topic, you are not taking into
consideration others who might like their post to stay around long enough to
get an answer. In effect you are crowing in front of them in line and this is
why the rule exists.

Sit back, enjoy the replies without the bumping every post?

Mine are at "Set-1" and all are zeroed out - center line. I wanted to keep it as close to normal as possible, particularly for testing purposes.

Also, I would prefer to do any post processing (sharpening, etc..) AFT than have the camera do it for me.

Regards,
Dave

PS: Sorry I didn't understand what you meant before. :-(

Hi Guys!!

I just received an email from the school principle informing me to make contact with the Athletic Director who will grant me access to the side-lines at every game.

She [the Principle] was excited to see the images and welcomed me as their "unofficial game photographer" :-)

Oh Oh..... the PRESSURE is on now .. but at least I'll have more "reach"

Dave

Look at all the messages in this thread and remove all of Dave's: you'll still see this thread near the top simply because of the many responses he gets.

Dave merely replies to all the contributors and while it appears -to you- that he is bumping, I believe he is NOT* . Actually, I'd call this (and him too BTW) moderating the thread, and personnally, I like it. Dave does a superb job at it. Keep it up.

I am now guilty of bumbing Dave!!!!!!!!!!!

invested in the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L NON IS version. Well, I love
this lens (my one and only L), but I also needed something to
deliver faster shutter speeds and high ISO performance, thus the
20D came into play. Well after going back and forth with the wife,
she finally allowed me to keep it.
Dave,

If they've any nighttime practices under the lights, try to get to those as well before the game. You don't mention using a flash (and it looks like you didn't use one last year?) but life'll be much different at night (as I'm learning the hard way as well - see the difference between images at the beginnng and end of the evening at http://miltonsports.smugmug.com/gallery/745684/1 )

Would I be allowed to use a flash while shooting from the side-lines? Gosh I would hate for a pass to be shot across a football field, me fire off my 420-EX and get blamed for blinding the receiver and thus foiling the pass. OMG I would litterally MELT into the field if such a thing happened.

Wooooo.. the THOUGHT of that alone is frightening. :-(

Dave

That's a good question for the AD beforehand, I guess. I didn't have any problems, but I was just using the 10D's onboard flash that night. And no, I didn't ask first ;-)

I've read a fair number of posts/articles (somewhere here? on sportsshooter.com? somewhere) that basicly say that, though some coaches/ADs think flashes are a problem, the players never even see them unless it's real obvious (they're already looking at you, and are on the near sideline, for example).

Let us know how it goes. I'm always interested in sports shots, ways other photographers find to make them and make them interesting for the parents. (why? http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1014&message=14732046 )

Find out when they do their scrimmages and see if you can attend. You can practice your sideline technique at the scrimmages...they will likely be after school or on weekends, so you will not be able to test the lighting.

At least you can get used to the flow of the game and learn to follow the action.

50% are the OP.

Replies are one thing, bumping is another. The key is to add content
so that learning can continue.

Why the bumping rule? Because other posters are trying to have their
questions answered too. Bumping makes their posts fade to the bottom
and so bumping is really crowing in line so you can continue your post
and keep it at the top. If you like people who crowd in line, then reply
and continue the bumping. Just wonder why someone who is in law
enforcement and posting from work on federal payroll can't follow a
rule and has no consideration for others that may want to actually post
about cameras and the topic of the forum? There are gallery forums for
posting family members with little or no info about the cameras of the forum?

Yes, he is very good at bumping..... granted..... but, does this crowd out
other posters? Well, that is what the bumping rule tried to address.

Dave,

I am mainly a lurker here on DPR. Since I purchased a 20D last fall I have followed your posts and learned a lot from your questions and the answers offered by other forum members. I think you will do very well with the 20D and the 70-200 combo.

I would like to offer a quick comment though on your latest football pictures. I noticed in the background that there is a "line" running across the width of the image. I am assuming it is a road or track behind the area where the team is practicing.

I found it distacting because it is very slanted. Especially on the two photos of the lone kicker. I know that it wouldn't be feasible to clone out the road in every shot. But would it be possible to rotate the image to straighten it?

Bobbie

P.S. I LOVE Scrappy!!!!

I will be talking with my son about all this today. With a little help, some guilded football watching on TV .. I should be half-way OK (at least I hope). :-)

Hi Bobbie,

Thanks sooooo much for the kind words my friend. You're 100% correct, and I should have noticed that. That's the track around the field where they practice. Here, the coach -- you can see it's almost straight:

Where here, showing the kicker.. you can see it's off (as is the entire background):

Yes... I see that now. GREAT catch my friend. Thank you much.

Regards,
Dave

PS: Scrappy loves you too ;-)

I won't "entertain" your bumping thing. However, please explain
how you came up with this information, if you don't mind?
You should read the rules and what they mean to others first. Maybe
explain what bumping is and why it is a rule here and what it does
to others trying to post. Then, search yourself for the reason you have
no consideration for the rule or other trying to get in on the party line
to have questions about cameras answered when you are bumping
your post about your family to the top every hour.... while at work?
Are you using federal time for this? Do you have rules at your guard
job? What would you think of the prisoners broke the basic rules of
the prison? Is there any need for rules? Does it hurt others? No, you
are more concerned about showing your latest football picture which
really has nothing to do with camera chat.

Also when people give you very good answers, you post the same
question two weeks later? Are you not getting the answer before? Why
wait our time with repeat question over and over just for another chance
to post your kids or wife? Come on Dave, read the bump rule or add some
new or interesting content. You have played the "I"m just a beginner" role
for two years. If you are not getting the feel for how to use the camera,
take some night school lessons. No, but that would not allow you to
post your family on the internet... now would it? You are addicted to
posting your family for others to see and that is sort of weird.... You use
the guise of a question, but repeat the question almost every month and
that is weird too?

If you venture out into the world you will find many other things to
post in the gallery forum. If you can add content without the 50% bumping,
that would allow other to get into the forum for real camera questions.

Get the point? Probably not!
